I just saw a black 17-40L attached to a 10D at my cousins wedding.
I only noticed 'cos I started speaking to the guy about his 10D (I was the only other DSLR user there with my 300D) and got close enough to notice the red stripe. I did ask hime about it and he said they did come in black as well.
I thought all L lenses were white. Or am I wrong?

You are wrong. Only L tele lenses are white. Wideangle and normal ones are black.

Just the long ones are white. Shorter L lenses are black with a red stripe.

I think (although I'm not absolutely positive) the black ones actually outnumber the white ones.
The white ones are a heck of a lot more impressive, however. :!:

i think from 70mm onwards, "L" starts to go white, not entirely sure tho', 'cuz i ain't got all the L lenses ... yet

70 and up on the zooms (wide end), and 300 and up on fixed-focal length lenses. Reduces heat buildup in the large lenses.

Yes.. plenty of telephoto "L" s are black too
85mm L
135mm L
200mm f/2.8 L
And some telephoto zooms were black too...
80-200mm f/2.8 L (or was it a 70 also)
100-300mm L
...and so on....

The 180mm f/3.5 L is black as well...

Doesn't the 'whiteness' depend more on the physical size of the lens in most cases?

Gee, I hope you didn't ask the photographer at your cousins wedding something catchy like:
'Hey, did you paint that red stripe on your lens to make it look like an 'L' lens? Y'know, you'll have to make it white then, as well '
... you live and learn ...
Best regards,
Andy
