Recently upgraded from a Canon A-1 film camera (bought in 1979) to a Canon 30D, along with a Canon 17-85 IS lens and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS. This weekend, I had a chance to shoot a baseball game. The subject in both photos (grey uniform) is the grandson of some friends. These are my first attempt at sports action photography with my new equipment. I must say the AF and IS capabilities really help. Both photos taken with the 70-200.
Photo 1: a successful steal
Photo 2: hit by a pitch

Nice action shots. Too bad you didn't get all of the catcher in the second one - my biggest problem. I'm learning to shoot a little wide to get everything in - to give me more to work with when cropping.

I was disappointed in that too. I actually did have a wide enough frame but I moved the camera a little too much to the right and cut off the catcher's back, while leaving a lot of empty space on the right (that I cropped out).
