I stopped in at the track yesterday and took a few pictures. I think (know) I was luckier at picture taking than I was picking horses. C&C would be appreciated.

I like the first shot. I've been trying this with cyclists. Got some good shots at 1/50th SS. My dusty sensor showed a bit. Next time I'll use an ND filter.

definitely a fair amount of noise in the second that could be cleaned a bit.

iso 100 .. could it be massivly over sharpened?

I'd say it might have been massively underexposed and corrected in PP.....it looks pretty overcast and I think you'd do well to get 1/2000 and f4 at ISO100.
It was shot in shutter priority at 1/2000, if safety shift wasn't on, then it would have shot wide open at f4 and underexposed.
if it was massively over sharpened I'd expect to see the halo effect around the edges more than the exaggerated noise.
That;s my randon stab in the dark!
Anyway - the shots.....love the first one, thing its a great idea and something nicely different.
The second one is good too - a nice angle...only concern would be the noise which at ISO100 you shouldn't be getting!

You guys are correct. I set my camera on ISO 100 in error. Cleaned it up as best I could in a short amount of time. I dread going back to try again as it's too expensive for me.

I find it easier to shoot in Av mode than Tv for general action - just remmeber to keep half an eye on the shutter speed to make sure it stays at the level you require. It at least means that you will get the shots properly exposed and avoid the noise and underexposure that you got here.
I look forward to seeing your next shots though - given what you've shown us here as a taster, I think the second set will be good

Since this was one of my first attempts at stopping action (or creating the illusion of speed), how do you control the shutter speed to get the desired result when you shoot in AV mode? I thought that you need to control the shutter speed to create the desired effect.

Admittedly its a little harder to do, however the general gist of it is if you are shooting in Av and looking to slow the shutter speed, just stop down the lens and that will ensure you get a slower shutter speed. Likewise, open up the aperture wide to gain the fastest possible shutter speed that conditions allow.
I prefer largely to control the DOF and throw the background out as much as possible to give the plainest possible backgrounds, hence shooting in manual or Av most of the time now. However I understand where you are coming from with controlling shutter speed.
Other thing to do is look at the custom functions and enable safety shift. If I remember rightly, if you are shooting in an AE mode, if the setting you choose doesn't enable you to correctly expose the image, it will "shift" the settings until you can get a properly exposed image. Someone please correct me if that is factually incorrect!!
Hope this helps,
Paul

I really want to get out to Arlington to try some shots. I love #2. Just did a little noise reduction.
