Imaging the Early Morning Solar Disk
18 June 2007

I found the Sun this morning trying to push it's way past the heavy haze over Chicago and grabbed a fews images of it:

This was my first shot and my favorite of the series. Shot at 1/3200 and wide open aperture - it captures a passing cloud.

That's great.

I recently came across a warning in a Panasonic manual to avoid pointing the CCD camera at the sun, though there is no such warning in my Canon manual. I think folks should be wary of making pictures of the fully bright sun with digital cams, twilight and dusk are OK. In the old days you could burn a hole in the shutter that way. Now your sensor could be toast very quickly from full sun. No warning, just poof, gone.
