70-200 2.8 IS + which extender for...

soccer game ...first time i am shooting such event ..it's not a paid assignement just want to test out mark III so which extender should i get for this lens and 1.3 crop body ...1.4 vs. 2 is there any drawback to using any of these ...focusing, IS ...i don't know ...also with extender i will decrease minimal focusing distance right? meaning if it's 1.2 m now it will be 0.6 for 2x extender ..right ? THX

I would get the 1.4x. Not too much IQ loss and some say the decrease in AF speed is hardly felt...

With the 2x you lose AF speed and 2 stops of light. IQ suffers but while I had this combo, it yielded decent results.

I sold the 2x after I got myself a 100-400L.

Those are Extension Tubes.
I think we are talking about Tele Converters / Extenders right? (implied by the 1.4x and 2x)

yeah i got all mixed up ...extenders, extension tubes ...new to the subject . I am still educating myself on this :)

I use the 1.4ex with the 70-200IS. It does stop you down to 4.0 but that is good enough... Great combo...You can check out my sport galleries to see the results (basketball is without the extender)...

He won't lose AF with the 1 series (MKIII).

'drogos' the Canon 2x was mainly designed for the long teles 300 2.8/400 2.8/500 4.0/600 4.0, but people have used them on the 70-200 and are happy with the results. So just depends on how much you're willing to compromise.

Tele-converters doesn't affect the IS, nor does it reduce minimum focus distance.

I think the general thinking is that with the 1.4x you hardly lose any IQ, and if you do, it'd be minimal. With the 2x, you start to notice the IQ loss...but IMHO still useable.

I would say if you are into shooting at 400mm a lot, then get a dedicated lens...
