I was at a parade this past weekend and took lots of great photos with my A540. Problem was, however, that I couldn't draw the objects close enough to me for a really good photo. My question then, is, does it make sense to buy a lens (telephoto)for the A540, or should I just expect that I'll need to get a SLR camera?

Thanks for everyone's input.

These add-on lenses usually degrade the image quality quite a bit so I can't recommend using them. For longer reach just try to zoom with your feet ;)

Very good advice! Sometimes, of course, that isn't possible or convenient, hence the popularity of the telephoto lens.

Do you find a lot of situations where you'd like the longer lens? Would you like, at times, to be able to get more into the picture than you can with the A540? Are there other things about the A540 you'd like to see work differently? If any of those answers is "Yes", you may be a candidate for an upgrade. If the idea of moving to a DSLR doesn't scare you then that may be the route to follow. If you really want a smaller camera than a DSLR, but don't want to stay with the A540, an S3 IS or S5 IS may be the answer. And if you don't do a lot of telephoto shooting, the add-on lens (and some degradation in IQ) may be the best answer. It's certainly the cheapest.
