Unfortunately for Dave he's intrusted me with the safekeeping of his two new lenses.. the first being his 400mm the second his 70-200 IS f4L.. Now, because it's me and not him I am going to start a look at the new glass thread.. He has asked for some test shots that i'll take in the next couple of days.. But, i'll be honest I went for the 400 first.. put it on the 30D and went wandering around my front yard.. So, here are the first shots.. Just a quick pass in CS2 auto levels and download to photobucket.. dang.. i'm impressed with that thing. and I have them all to myself for the next two months..

The majority of my DNA is Scot. Thank god. I only pay full price for movies, gas and cable. Even then I try to get a deal.

LOL.. boy do I hear you there.. My mother's Irish.. there's a few things she taught me. Right after the rule where women don't wear red lipstick in the daytime and never open an umbrella in the house came the thrifty rule.. If you have to don't comlain but always look before you spend... ;) ;) ..

Like camera gear.

Now give that lens a good test so I can decide if I should change gear strategy for africa.

LMAO.. i'm thinking the same thing.. change it up from Chuck to a prime.. But, I think ultimately i'm going to want the versatility.. but, with two bodies that might not be such an issue..

For the uninitiated, which 400 is it?

Ahh......condyk and sari beginning the progression to Lcoholic gearhead :p (I'm a gearhead, but at least I'm CONSISTENT ;) )

Isn't the Bigma vastly superior? Covers the entire range at one go.

Never open an umbrella in the house? So does that mean I'm limited to softboxes and snoots only for my monolights? ;)

Bigma was something I considered for a long time.. But, in the end I went with Chuck.. Dave isn't a gearhead but, were both practical enough to make smart purchases.. ;) ;) ..

As to the umbrella in the house. It's bad luck. I can't remember exactly why it's bad luck but it is and I won't do it.. I can tell you all the other weird superstitions but y'all will laugh at me..:o

Yeah, two bodies, 70-200 and 400 is a nice combo, but not as easy as a singkle lens when in a bakkie and trying to move around ... easier than I will have tho' with single body and two lenses. Ah well ....

The shot is looking Ok but the Bokah sucks and the PP seems a bit weird, like the auto levels/contrast isn't right. You can see decent detail in the feet. On a tripod is the test. HArd to hand hold a 400mm ;-)

A gear head is all talk and no shooting, so yeah you are consistent ;) Begin the journey? I've had 11 L's over the 2 years I have had a DSLR, so nothing new. Few actually deliver the quality/value for me over the competition. The Bigma is very capable as any search will show. When in the right hands of course. I would happily have taken one.

I took a few more birdy pictures for ya today.. I'll be fair and say I don't notice the IS on the 70-200 it feels like mine.. but the 400 is sharp as a tack and fast... I think you'll be happy as a clam with them both.. I'll be sending the boxes on to you in the next few days..

I think that 400mm needs to be tested here in Manhattan, Dave. After all you are going to use it for wildlife. Let's see if it's good for street photography :)

I think it's a pretty common joke in England that the Scottish are supposed to be er, um, thrifty. My husband's uncle is Scottish and lives in England. Not cheap and a great guy though! LOL.

LOL! With that lens I'll be able to take pictures of the insides of the nostrils of my subjects. And it would be too attractive to some of the wildlife here who are attracted to expensive looking equipment, and take it by force :)

Seriously, that lens looks quite good judging by the photos you took, Sari.

well thanks.. but, i'll tell ya the truth I think that I prefer Chuck.. it's a beautiful lens.. sharp as a tack it feels almost as fast as both of the 70-200's currently residing in my camera bag.. But, it's a brick and as steady as I think I am.. (little bit of ego going on there).. I like the IS... and the I.Q. isn't superior enough for me to lose the zoom and IS..

BTW.. isn't my abby-girl a cutey?.. she's loving that I have two camera bodies and she's trying to get me to tell her just how much older she'll have to be before I pass the XT down to her...

  .. Dave is a very intelligent dry wit kind of gentlemen.. somehow I don't think he'd appreciate having his lenses named..

However, I'm leaning towards 'Charlie' for the 400mm.. but, don't tell him. I really don't think he'd care for it very much.. :o ;)

Aren't they already named, aka 400mm 5.6 L and 70-200mm 4.0 IS L?

   Now, i'm impressed Dave, truly impressed. I think Charles works for the 400mm.. After all it's a more formal Chuck. which is appropriate.. what about Charles and Diana?... do you Brits even like Camilla yet? :p

I am more naturally orientated towards anarcism, socialism and a Peoples Republic of England. Charles, Camila, Diana, aka the PR department Mother Theresa, don't really exist on my radar, other than as cartoon characters, rather like your own Simpsons ;-)
