feels really wierd... i just got my 70-200 F/4 and after some test shots, found that its sharpness is superior to my 24-105 F/4's, well at least in straight-from-camera performance. have you guys felt the same way for a particular lens outshining its "siblings" in yr lens collection? the 24-105 aint no slouch of course but being bettered by its sibling (sorry i can't help it, i see lenses as children with the camera body being its mummy ;) ) now i find "it could be better". surprise surprise, it was actually my wife who pointed this out to me! as im someone who prefers to keep PP to a minimum, the 70-200 suddenly overshadowed its little brother. im not going to throw out my 24-105 of course.
less the flames start coming my way, this is not an "IQ/sharpness" topic, but more of a sharing of views when we encounter such "it used to be good but now it seems it could have been better" situations. have you guys encountered the same situation and what are yr thots?

I hope you never buy any of the really fancy stuff then - you'll never look at your existing lenses the same again!
It's all relative. I used to think the 50/1.4 was awesome - now it's rubbish.

I'm just that way with my 70-200 2.8IS versus the 24-105. But the 24-105 was my first lens. And, like a first-born, is still my favourite (especially on the 5D). The 7-2 is much sharper I find, sometimes.

nice to know im not alone! :p
i guess its natural then.. and since you brought it up, im eyeing a prime lens to add to the mix later, most probably a 100mm F/2.8 Macro. its no L but a specialised prime lens, don't know if that falls in the 'fancy' category?
but i have to admit the 24-105 have its strengths too, it excels under soft lighting and heard from others also in indoor flash photography. i find even lenses have their own character - 70-200 F/4L - "C'mon throw it my way!", the 24-105 F/4L - "Gently please, let me check first"

To me each new lens I buy seems sharper/nicer than the rest for the first few weeks. Seems about the time I get the credit card bill it begins to look like the others.

Once I got my 500 I was trying to justify as many uses as I could for it, still looking to do some 500mm head shots...need more studio space.

My 24-105 leaves our 100-400 for dead in IQ, speed of AF, etc, but then it's really horses for courses- I never expected the 100-400 to be superior.

It's normal, and I agree. It's even worse when you let one of the children that was once your favorite go, because it has been surpassed. OK, I never felt that way about the crappy lenses I started with, but I do regret letting the tamron 28-75 go. My plan is to add a 1dm2 by next spring, and I am kicking myself for not holding on to my very sharp copy of the trusty tammy. Oh well.
