View Full Version : Why can't I see EXIF info in XP?

I'm a computer nerd, so it pains me to ask this here, but I know I could always choose the Advanced Properties of the images I took with my S50 and see full image information. With images taken from my DRebel, I no longer have any of this information available.
Am I missing a setting on the camera or? I'm not shooting in RAW, but in highest JPEG mode.
Any help is appreciated!
Adam

I can see my 10D info on XP.. Try this::
- Right click on the photo..
- Choose properties,
- Click on the summary tab..
- In the summary tab, click on the 'Advanced >>' button (It's on the bottom right part of the window.. under comments)..
You should see most of the EXIF info.... A few things are non standard and won't show up, but at least 90% of it is there.. If not, you've probably got something screwed up with Windows..

I think that after you change the file form the way it was when it was downloaded then you lose all EXIF info.

This always worked in Windows XP, built in feature not requiring any additional software. As described above, you check the properties of the image and turn on Advanced, showing you all of the EXIF information. Mine no longer does it with the DRebel. It doesn't give you the tab if you try to do it from the CF card itself, and it doesn't work on straight copies from the card.
Can someone with XP Home or Pro try this and see if it works for them? Someone with a DRebel?
Thanks!

What kind of file is it? JPEG?

Just checked and sure enough the exif info is there for JPEGs but not there for RAW files. I use a DRebel and XP Home.

Adam: You are straight copying the files over and not using software of any kind to copy from CF to computer?

I have a DRebel and direct copy my files, both RAW and RAW from the CF and do not lose the EXIF data. If you are dragging the files, make sure that you take the THM files with the CWR files when you copy.

Dale,
My RAW files retain the EXIF data and it can be viewed in photo editing/viewing software, but it doesn't show up when right clicking in Windows XP. This isn't an issue to me, I didn't even know you could see the EXIF data using Windows XP. I was just responding to Adam's request.

Weird... yeah I'm just dragging the JPG and dropping it onto my desktop, and no dice on the EXIF info. I was wondering if this could be toggled in the camera, which is why I posted. Otherwise I can't figure out why the S50 would show it but the DRebel would not.
Hmmmmmm

Ok another quick test.. can someone please post a link to a .JPG file that you have with the EXIF info showing up on your machine? That way when I save it to my machine, I can determine whether it's the image file from my camera or my PC that is the problem here.
Thanks!!!

I don't know if this is helpfull or not, but when I right click a RAW picture in file explorer (XP) I don't see the EXIF in advanced properties. But upon extracting the the JPG and right clicking on the JPG I do get most of the EXIF data on the advanced properties.
I agree, it's a little odd that the RAW doesn't show the EXIF, but also, I usually on ly look at the EXIF in Zoombrowser or Photoshop CS.

Bother. URL failure. Sorry!
try http://joebloggs.servebeer.com/Egypt/BIGimages/images/IMG_0155.JPG
(found the "edit" button - yay!)
another piece of useful (?) info, sometimes I get more EXIF info than others. copying a whole directory onto a Win XP mach at once gives different info in the same set of files...

Thanks for posting (was it hosted on a 56k server?!?!) I checked the Advanced tab in XP and it shows nothing, nada, zip. Guess I'll call some friends at MS and see what's going on.
Thanks for taking the time to help. I'll post the resolution just in case this gets searched for in the future.

Don't send support an e-mail. I did about a month ago and never got a reply.
Maybe they are still trying to do ME support. That would take forever.

One possible solution would be by running "regedit" and looking at:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpe
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
There, content Type should be "image/jpeg"
PerceivedType should be "image"
If those entries don't exist just add/create them (they are "string values" inside each key).
Another solution would be to go to the "tools/folder options" drop down menu in "Windwos Explorer" and remove the .jpg, .jpeg and .jpe types from there... the next time you access such a file those entries will be recreated and then all will be working just fine...
...I hope that helped...

Hey Penguin, I won't mention what I do, but I won't have to send support any e-mail, I'll just walk over and ask them :)
Need to go check that registry setting now... oh and update the camera's firmware to enable ISO3200 and MLU and FEC on the jump button!

taltosgr is a genius. Regedit showed the proper information under the .JPE key, but not under .JPEG or .JPG. Manually added the information and rebooted - sure enough, everything shows up with all EXIF information on my JPGs now.
Thanks a million!

I could tell you but I'd have to kill you :-) When I get my Athlon64 box up and running in a few weeks I'll post a few pictures of Longhorn x64.
But I DO have a Windows 2003 server running (32) 3.0Ghz 4Mb cache XEON procs with 32Gb of RAM and 96 PCI slots if that's worth anything to ya' :) Attached to 9Tb of fiber based 15kRPM drives to do with what I want.

That image does not have any Exif info according to ViewEXIF 1.9
I know that some software has a nasty habit of stripping the Exif data. I use Downloader Pro and let it manage the downloads from my CF reader or even my FlashTrax and the Exif data has always remained intact. Just check any of my image posts.

LOL that's ok. Linux is like the Mac. Great for the 3 things it does
Try scaling MySQL to 32 processors on Linux...
Ah the age old dilema of OS vs. OS vs. OS. Not long ago we were arguing Windows 3.11 for Workgroups vs. OS/2!

BTW, it's about to hail and storm very nastily over me in Ft. Worth. Check out this pic I just took of the clouds. I'm no meteorologist, but they don't look pretty!
(of course I left it on ISO100 handheld so it's a little dark, but you get the idea!)

I have never seen clouds like that! Mac is bad, Very bad. Windows and Linux are good, very good. I was seeing a post on a Webmasters forum about how people think that google is setting up to make a IM and then an OS. I will find it and post it.

Adam: The only time I've seen clouds like that is in movies/videos about storm-chasers. You know...them people that chase tornadoes? Keep an eye out for funnels!

man we got a real turd washer come through after those clouds. Tornados, hail to the size of golf balls and 90mph winds. Gotta love Texas! This will help the humidity reach 100% tomorrow when it's 98 degrees.
And to think that I fertilized the yard two hours before when it was sunny.

Sound like Missouri. It also sounds a lot like Houston.
