You may remember I mentioned a while ago that my brother in law had bought me a small umbrella reflector ( one of those silver/white reversible things). Just for fun I tried using yesterday as a sunshade (it's really a bit too shady). It was very bright sun yesterday which ruled out doing reasonable natural light shots. Apart from looking even odder than usual seems to work reasonably- Interestingly with a shade patch this big the bugs tend to stay where they are. Might just invest in a partial shade umbrella.

I like the depth of the first over the second with the shade; I do like the shots with the fill flash- they seem brighter than the first two.

I think fill flash is the better choice.

love the third shot - looks like its flying. Take it to be Sphaerophoria sp.

Thanks for the comments all. I'm still playing as you can see, but I think a partial shade umbrella should do the trick :) perhaps with fill flash as well.

RM hover #1 is Eupodes corollae, and yes #2 is Sphaerophoria scripta (I think)

Thanks lawrie :)
As I said above think I might get a partial shade brolly should allow decent natural light shots in bright sun. I've seen some dual use ones that are used either as reflectors or as diffusers so assume they have a higher % transmission than the reflector one I was using.

Interesting shots Brian - fill flash shots look good my end.

Only brolly I want is one to keep the damn rain off
