Dear all,

I'm new member here and like to pose a question about battery for Canon 300D (BP-511).

2 weeks ago I bought BG-E1, the battery grip for my 300D which not only make 300D look more appealing but also allow me to put two batteries for a longer operational time and also more weight to stabilize my camera.

Currently I only have one battery (original battery from canon) and to fill in the empty battery slot, a second BP-511 is is my next buy.

But looking at price tag really make me think twice (or more than that) to buy the original battery from canon. Then I realize that there is another cheaper option which is to buy generic battery from other manufacturer.

But again this pose a question :

Is it OK to combine two different batteries (Original vs Generic) into my 300D Battery Grip?

Has anyone done this before? Please share the experience...

Many thanks,
Maulana

That is not a problem.

If you combined one battery that was faulty and one battery that was new, you would see less than optimal results, but I wouldn't worry about two brands of battery.

I got 2 generic BP-11's for a grand total of $15 and have been using them since December. I can't tell a difference between them and the original Canon battery.

I got: 2PK BP-512 Cam Battery CANON, from an ebay merchant in early Dec. for $14.99. Here is their website:

They treated me well, and I have no hesitation to recommend them.

I just looked at the website and they are selling 1 BP-511 for $14.99, but I got 2 for that price on ebay...you might try that.

I found them on eBay. They're selling a BP-512 for $4.74 + $6 shipping. Not too shabby... But the auction indicates:

For use with Canon
* Compatible with model :
* EOS D-series D60 / D30 / EOS 10D
* PowerShot Pro90 IS / G1 / G2 / G3 / G5

No 300D or Digital Rebel -- forgive me for being stupid, but it's the right battery isn't it? I don't think I've taken the battery out of my G1 since I put it in 3 years ago, but I didn't think it was the same size as the one in the Rebel...

And what's the main difference b/w the 511 and the 512?

you want to buy the grip right ?
If you look under the "features" of the BG-E1 it says there you can fill it up with 2 batteries BP-511, or BP-512. I suppose 512 will work... But 15 bucks is still a very good price compared to $49 for a Canon battery.

The case is shaped differently in the center.

I think the video cameras can use either model because the bacvk of it hangs out in midair but the 300D/10D can only use the 511 model .

And to add to others rec's
i too have a super cheap battery.I bought the cheapest one off ebay and it goes great :)

DRebel/300D can use either the 511 or 512.

I hadn't considered the grip -- I was just looking for a spare battery. Of course, that's something else to consider... Maybe I can find one of those on eBay as well...

The BG-E1 is my next planned purchase in what appears to be a very long list of planned and unplanned purchases. My local Walmart had generic BP-511's on clearance for $20. I have read earlier in this forum that people seemed happy with it.

I burned through 2 512 MB CF cards in the hot California desert over the weekend on that single battery charge. (Large JPG, No Review) I haven't used this battery enough to give it a review, but I might pick another battery or two if this generic works out for me.

I found the eBay seller that you suggested, Daniel, and ordered the 2-pack for $9.95 + $5.99 shipping. Not too shabby :)

Is it OK to do each of the following:

1. charge the battery before it is fully discharged from time to time

2. only charge the battery for 90 minutes and forget the extra hour occasionally

3. eat the battery

will doing either of the first two shorten the battery life for subsequent charges?
