I covered a mountain bike race this past weekend, for the promoter and Cyclingnews.com. From Cyclingnews I have a request from a sponsor of one of the riders for a shot of her winning the womens race. Being I'm new, to the business end, I used to shoot freelance for a local paper on an assigment basis, have no idea what is normal to charge for a photo/file.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

What you charge depends on the usage rights the sponsor wants.
Also if the sponsor is wanting to use the photo for commercial (advertising) purposes which I assume they will make sure that you have a release from the cyclist.

You need to find out what they are going to use the photo for and then you can start to narrow it down. Do some online research, there are some pricing guides out there that will help. When you know what they want to do with it, you can research it using some of the pricing guides and get a good idea of what to charge.
Also, if you plan on doing this fairly regularly, you might want to pick up FotoQuote. www.fotoquote.com Its well worth the money and will help you make the most of your sales. My first sale with it paid for the program because I was able to charge so much more than I thought I could have.
Good luck.
