View Full Version : RWBC Members - Slogan/Opinions Needed

So as many of you know, I've been making talk about the RWBC patches and baseball caps. I've finally got a draft, but I'm stumped - we need a slogan.
"One Bird, One Goal" - but I have no idea what the goal is...
"Get the bird!" - Or is this the goal?
"Chimp no more!" - Huh?
"Okalee!" - The male RWB song "Okalee!" can be heard here (http://www.learner.org/jnorth/sounds/RwOkalee.wav)
I have no more ideas about slogans.
And this is as far as I got for the patch layout. Perhaps we can actually get it embroidered... The above with a black border, or on a black baseball cap? ? ?

Only coz for every 100 pics, you *might* get 1 that turns out OK. :?

LMAO !!!!!!
I vote for the first slogan.
The second one makes us look like hunters, the third one... well I don't really see the connection, and the last one I think would generate comments about our sanity.
Lookin good, Scottes.

If you take lots of pictures of RWBs you do A LOT of chimping - they're tough to get exposed correctly. I chimped almost every shot for the first 100 I took. LOL!

ooooh, okay.
This applies to "partial chimpers". I am a "total chimper", so I chimp no matter what's in the picture :P , just to make sure.

Here's phrase that comes to mind but I still haven't figured out how to work it into a slogan.
"Not just any ol' blackbird but a RED-WINGED blackbird!!!"

That's catchy.. but it would work just as well shortened to
"not just any ol' Blackbird...."

As for the hat, why not the big RWBC on the front and on the back the image of the RWB?

To be honest with you, Scott, when I first saw this thread I was kind of taken aback by it in a spooky sort of way! Why, because just before I saw this I was in Photoshop working on a black cap putting in red and yellow patches on the side of the cap. I was about to work on the front with a big RWBC lettering in the center surrounded by the words "Red-winged Blackbird Club" going around in a circle but it dawned on me that it was going to take more effort than I initially thought and it was getting late for me. It was supposed to be a joke for Ian since he had asked about his cap and patch.
Anyway, as soon as I get out of Photoshop and get back to the forum, what do I find waiting for me but this post. My first thought was, "This is creepy!" But then it dawned on me that it's nothing more than great minds thinking alike (or so I'd like to think).

Too funny, and yes, great minds *do* think alike.
So far I like Ian's slogan - throwing "justabird" in there is oh so perfect. I'm not so enamored with my design so far though.
I did a little bit of hunting and there are places that will do small runs of custom embroidery. Seems like 12 is a minimum, and I have no idea of price because they need a sample to generate a quote.
I have seen places at malls which do one-time custom embroidery on baseball caps. I'm more inclined to go with patches though, as I'm not likely to wear a hat, except in blizzards. And hats would be more expensive, and patches fit in an envelope if I mail them out.
Is anyone seriously up for patches? I get a kick out of it, so I'm in.

Yeah, me, too!
How about we put our collective photoshop skills together and try to come up with a neat design. Maybe we can make it (size-wise) so you can sew it to your shirt arm or on the front of a baseball cap or your camera bag or backpack?
I've already got one idea in my head and I'll see if I can come up with the actual design to show you tonight. If everybody comes up with at least one idea, even if it's just verbal for the PS challenged, we can merge the ideas to come up with one everybody might like.

Sounds good to me. I'm pretty good at PS but not so great at design so that certainly works for me. I'll work on contacting a couple of companies and getting some idea on quotes (if possible without a final design) and format, number of colors, etc.
I'm also going to ask CDS to move this to Chat since it's beyond Sharing pictures now.

Patch....yes. PhotoShop skills......hell if I tried designing a patch it would end up looking like a stick bird.
I will however offer witty comments upon others postings and will vote yes to almost anything.

I did a little info gathering with do-it-yourself quotes onlines. We'd basically be looking at 10 colors to get several shades of black in the bird. Some black text some red text.
To get a 2" x 4" patch means that this has to fit onto a 60 pixel x 120 pixel image. That's this:
http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/rwbc-official-small.jpg
Considering the cost for them to digitize this, 12 of them would cost $108. That's $9 each. *IF* 12 people want them.
If we bump up the stitches per inch, we could get a 2x4" patch from this:
http://www.itsanadventure.com/postimages/rwbc-official-small2.jpg
And now we're looking at $14 each.
None of the above is final, I just want to get an idea of interest. 12 seems to be a minimum. The prices aren't necessarily exorbitant, but it's still a lot to spend for a small embroidered patch.
Still in?

Hell yes. Got a ton of space on the photo vest.
What folks have to remember is that these patchs will be very limited and someday one might appear on the "Antiques Road Show" and the owner might be told that they are in possession of a very rare item associated with a group of wackos that went around photographing RWB's (here is where they pause and give that "What in heck were they thinking" look) and when originally purchased was around $14.00 and is now worth over a gizillion dollars :!:
Hell, come to think of it, I'll take 2 :!:

One thought: if we decide to go with the smaller design, I thik the text on the bottom needs to be sized up a little, because I don't think it would be visible as is... maybe less text, bigger size would work, to keep the overall size.

How much extra would it cost if we ask them to throw in a magnifying glass so we can read the small print?
I can easily do two, too, if it comes to needing enough people.

Don't tell anyone, though, they might jump in and buy all the 12 copies of this exquisite work of art.

Hell yeah, Lazy, you're in!
Some more research... this might not be as expensive as I thought. To convert an image from a photo/whatever to the stitching machine's format is called digitizing - which is silly because a JPG *is* digitized. But the digitizing charge is based on stitch count, and I was thinking that every part of the image would be stitch count - totally forgetting about having a solid background. So the bird and the letters might be the only things that require stiches.
So these things *might* be half the price - or we can make them twice as fancy. :) I gotta get on the phone tomorrow and call a couple places.

Jerry, since it is kind of difficult to take pictures of RWB when none are to be found, we have made concessions to our strict requirements and will now accept reasonable facsimiles of the RWB. But the key word is "reasonable". A common grackle with irridescent purple head and painted-on red and yellow stripes that are arched the wrong way would not be considered a reasonable facsimile. How about using a crow, painting on the stripes with the correct arch and then resizing it to 2/3 actual size. Then you'd be in!

OK, Jerry, if you don't want to get in with a reasonable facsimile, I'll let you in on a secret. Go drive around your neighborhood and see if you can find a place where there are cattail patches growing where there's some stagnant water. That's where the RWBs like to hang out. And at this time of the year, they'll even probably have a nest or two in there. At feeding time, you'll see the males and the females taking turns flying away and bringing back food for the brood. Try hanging out there (in your car would be best) after 4:30 in the afternoon and I'm sure you'll be able to get some good shots of them. Happy hunting. :)

Jerry, Leo is right on. These are possibly the most common bird in the US. OK, so they're probably #4 or #5. Anywhere there are cattails or marshy-type grass should yield a number of RWBs. Listen to this (http://www.learner.org/jnorth/sounds/RwOkalee.wav) - it's the male song for "Hey! This is MY turf!" or some other testosterone-induced saying. It's fairly loud, and VERY distinct. It should let you hone in on the males.
Early morning or late afternoon is best - they're active, and the low sun helps define the feathers. Add some EC, too.
And I take offense about allowing Lazy into the club because she's a girl. I let her in because she's a lady. :)
