I have found the small brown catch which is intended to hold the battery in place while the battery cover is open is completely useless. So when the cover is open the battery pops up.
Closing the battery cover without the battery secured first seems pretty hard on the hinge.
Are other s30/s40users experiencing this problem?

No, sorry, my catch keeps the battery firmly in place and I suspect you are right to be worried about the extra strain on the cover. If it's under guarantee, send it back! If not, it may be worth trying to get it fixed ?

iandnor,
I too have the small anoyance of the battery catch. In another forum it was suggested to lightly rough up the battery in that area. Just a stroke of a fingernail file did the trick for me. Remember lightly.

i own an s30 and have had the same problem with the battery catch. i have just ignored it and closed the latch on it but now i'm concerned about the stress on the hinge. i will try lightly roughing up the part of the battery that makes contact with the catch and see if that helps.

Canon has told me that there were some s30s released with faulty catches, and to send the camera in for the catch to be replaced.
I found roughing up the battery didn't really help. The catch on my camera was definitely faulty - it was bloody useless to be honest.
If you have one with this annoying problem, give Canon a call. Don't try to live with it just to have the hinge on the cover break just on the wrong side of the warranty period.
