With EE it is possible to use a resize method by fixed sized. I like that for microthumb but when using that resize method photos are shrinked. Why not cropping the image (center, left, right, top, bottom) instead? Right now I can only do that manually when using a programm like photoshop and using manual upload.

With Imagemagick even croping is possible only, as far as i can see, not in the preprogrammed fields of EE2. Perhaps it works in the extra command field that's there for the taking.
But what i don't understand is, why to use automatic croping? This way you gona lose image information without controlling what... or not?

In most cases the most important details is in the center of a photo. for all other cases you could use still manual cropping for that special photo. It's still better loosing some information than shrinking which looks really awful!

Do you ever compose your photos, or do you do random shots?
If the off-center areas of your photos do not contain relevant parts of them, why did you take those pictures that way?

I didn't say it doesn't contain relevant parts, I just say that in many (not all!) cases the main subject is in the center. Please forgive for not being a native speaker but I can't explain it better in english. But what's wrong with offering an option for cropping for those who need it? If you don't need it you don't have to use it. I prefer microthumbs with fixed sizes but I don't want them being shrinked as it's done right now. At the moment I have to use manual upload because of the missing options with fixed size. If I could choose where to crop while uploading it would save lots of time. (I had seen a gallery offering different cropping option but that gallery had other disadvantages so I stayed with EE). Shrinked microthumbs are not really an alternative or would you prefer shrinked photos instead of cropped?

"SPECIAL: no ftp or resize automation (manual file upload)" with UPLOAD TO DATABASE:
I'm using this option since EE 1.5RC4, because photoshop generates superb jpg images with smaller size, compared to ImageMagick.
If this works for you, why bother with EE resize methods?

Edit: Just to understand you correctly: You want to generate a microthumb by cropping a full size image?

No, not exactly. It should be a crop of the resized pic. Right now I first resize the Originalpic to 55 mm at the shortest side (for microthumbs), and then this resized pic will be cropped to 55 x 55 mm. If you could choose how to crop this (left, center, top, bottom) it would be more convenient doing this via EE. Of course it works via photoshop but it take lots more time although I am using actions for this but I have to upload everything manually and I would just prefer doing this via the EE admin interface.
