Hi hope someone can help. A friend is thinking of replacing his canon AE-1 programme with an EOS 400d and asked if his collection of FD lenses will fit the new body. I know they won't fit directly but is it possible to fit them using am adapter mount?

Thanks

There are cheap adapters available but the optical quality is not very good. Also, the focal lengths will all be increased by 1.3x. Canon made an OEM adapter years ago but they are hard to find and quite expensive. The Canon adapters increase the focal length by 1.3x, too. Best bet is to sell all the FD mount lenses and get one or two good EF lenses for the 400D.

Besdies, the technology has so improved. Do you really want to use FD lenses?

There's no harm in using older manual focus lenses on your EOS camera.
However, not FD lenses (as they need the optical adapter).

Instead look at NOINK, M42, Olympus, Contax/Yashica, Pentacon etc...
Those only need an adapter without additional optics, so no degradation in image quality.

For a longer version of this suggestion, go to this thread:
Using FD (and other) lenses on EOS bodies. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=57023)

Thanks to all for confirming what I thought was the case.
