I recently bit the bullet and bought the 24-70 f/2.8 L lens. I had a niece who got married this past weekend and I was able to shoot over the photographer's sholder. 90 percent of the pictures were not sharp. I used a 550ex speedlite at Tv 1/60 and an Av 4.0 most of the time. However, even the non flash Tv 250, Av 5.6 pictures were not in focus. Any ideas? I am very unhappy with this lens and if I can not figure out what is wrong I will try to to return it. Thanks.

Could you post some examples or a link to some examples? This would help us help you.

I had similar experience with this lense and returned it. Very disapointed, wanted the f2.8 and the quality of an "L". Cheap lense(28-135 IS) seemed to do better allthough it is a lot slower at f 5.6 and theretically inferior in sharpness. Definitally not as good a build. But I can get acceptable pics. Not the quality level of picture that I had wanted but at least usable and not out the price of the 'first choice lense'.

I'm really curious what's going on here. How can a $1000+ lens attached to a $1000+ camera yield fuzzy photos?
Am I just naieve?
As mentioned by Cadwell, some posted examples with EXIF info would be useful.

I'm kinda perplexed too...
The only way I could see this is if you are looking at the RAW pics before processing them. I hope you realise that they will need some tweeking. Some of the best pics I have taken yet come from my Canon 24-70mm F2.8L. Some pics would be incredibly helpful...

Iondell:
We need to see the photos. It does sound as if something is wrong with the lens (or your camera - did you check to make sure your camera was working ok with another lens?). I have the 24-70L and it beats both my 24-85 and 28-135IS hands down in terms of sharpness and color.

Very odd. My 24-70L is sharp enough to shave with on either the 10D or 1D.
As everyone is asking, please post an example.

It sounds like you might have had the lens in manual mode rather than auto focus mode.
Check to make sure the switch on the lens is in the AF position and not the MF position... or inbetween.

is the entire photo not in focus or just the object? is there any other part of the photo that is still sharp? could it be the focus point?
i'm just guessing, it would be a lot more straight-forward is u can post a sample image.
i never had any problem with mine.
