If anyone is interested, here are the charges by the Canon factory service center in Irvine.

The lens simply snapped off at the lens mount. The camera is fine, I think.

How did the lens fare?
The lens elements and motion of the elements are fine, according to Canon. They will need to to a focus check when they are done, but seem to think it ill not be a problem. It was very interesting how it broke off at 3 points around the circumference of the lens. It looks that maybe it was designed to do this - possibly. As opposed to all the glass absorbing the impact.

If it's not too painful to recall...how did you manage to drop it?

I just bought a new tripod and I had mounted the camera to it.
The Tripod is a BILORA 1193. The plate that attached to the camera is then mounted to tripod head. The mechanism that grips the plate apparently did not lock (it is supposed to spring back). I moved the tripod
to a different location (with the camera mounted). When I set the tripod back down, the camera just popped out - forward on to the carpeted floor. About 5' drop. The lens took the whole impact. There is not a scratch on the camera and It seems to work fine with other lenses.
I would be curious if any one out there has experience with BILORA tripods. The mount mechanism is very..... not "fool proof" obviously.
Seriously, it is a strange design. It is not positive locking.
Ahhhh!!
I'm going to take to some Vicadin and take a nap now.
Ok goodnight.

Ohhhhh...OK. Yeah, I am sort of paranoid about that. I use Bogen tripods and heads. They have that big octagonal quick disconnect plate and have a spring-loaded latching mechanism. I always lift up on the camera after I latch it to make sure it's in there solidly.

I have always used bogan tripods myself, even with heavy 4x5 view cameras. I have never had a problem.
I just went and played with the BILORA tripod mounting again.
It's not very good. Stick with Bogan or Gitzo is good also.

Wait, wait, wait. A photographer's L lens succumbs to brutal carnage and yet there is not a single picture taken? Come on man, get with it! :D

No Photos.
I quickly put in a box and shipped to IRVINE.
Quickly...out of sight...into the box... and out the door... far, far away from me....where it will be safe. I think it's better that way.

Yes i've seen quite a few lens rear chassis parts and many of them do seem to be deliberately designed to break at that (and other) points :)
Very sensible design! thankyou canon

I feel I should say something humorous here, but the best I can muster is: "I feel your pain."
My dropped lens cost me $300 to fix, and it was still working---only the manual focus ring wouldn't turn. Everything else functioned normally including the autofocus, IS, and aperture.
