This is one of my first dozen shots with my new Canon 100 2.8 lens and Canon 430 flash. Some of the highlights seem to be burned out, so I'm thinking my paper towel defuser needs to be larger so the flash is more spread out. This was handheld, F11, 1/200th. This is some fun stuff! Used to be I had to travel for cool pictures, but there are cool macro shots 30 feet from my front door. I may even have to grow a garden to attract more bugs.

Very good for a first try.
The 100mm is a super lens, just go out and shot, shot and shot some more.
Good luck.

Good shot for first try. As well as looking at the diffuser, you may need to determine an average FEC value for your set up to change the flash intensity if you haven't already tried that.
