What is the best flash available for the 10D. I will need the most versatile... ie. outside fill flash, inside wedding, portraiture, etc.
Does Canon have wireless control capability like Nikon to slave flashes, etc??
thanks,
Tom

Canon flashes have infrared 4-channel system with remote ratio setup.
550 is the biggest most versatile one, and it can act as master or slave. With it you can control ratio of 3 flashes remotely. Only this model has manual setting and strobo.
420 can act as slave. Less power than 550, but still very usable and easy to carry.
ST-E2 is a infrared transmitter unit for controlling ratio and triggering two flashes (four channels). Also be used as assist light.
If you do not want/need infrared, bet some radio transmitter system like Pocket Wizard. In some cases easier (infrared is more difficult outdoors for example, and with big lenses which block the rays).

550EX and 420EX are the two big ones. I have one of each.
Make sure that you see -EX on the model number, and don't use just 550 or 420, because there are older model numbers like 540EZ, and these have very little compatibility with the newer digital cameras.

I have and recommend the Canon 550EX for the most versatile. I use it for all occasions and once you get it if you do practice & more practice That way the multiple settings on the flash will become second nature to you. Example I know if indoors for an event I start witrh 400 ISO 1/60 @ 5.6 & the Flash Ettl mode. That puts me most of the time 1 to 2 stops off a good exposure. Overall Canon has a good flash but I wish they would do some updating of feature.
Good Luck
