My heels are starting to itch on me.. i've been home for three whole months. I have to stay here for two more at the very least. (gotta get ready for Africa).. But, dang all I can think about is leaving.. Washington sounds good, Montana sounds excellent.. Nevada is tempting.. Good grief when I got a text message from my sister in virginia even that sounded like a good spot to pack up to..

Now, don't tell on me but there's no way i'm going to stay home through the winter.. I've got to find a gig somewhere.. anywhere. I know we all have our little personality quirks. I think my tendency towards leaving is a little on the extreme side.. But, I can't be the only one who looks around thinks to myself.. 'I've taken these pictures' and immediately starts to compose new shots in new places in my head and start thinking up all the ways I can make it happen.. I'm a big believer in investing real time. A long weekend isn't gonna cut it..

so, the thought for you.. where would you want to spend the winter if you were me?.. any suggestions helpful I think i'll feel better once I start planning..

oh, and don't tell my aunt. she wants me home for christmas this year..

Turks and Caicos Island....

the only problem with that is I'm thinking from November until March/April.. maybe one of the ski resorts in Colorado would work well.. I want to go to Alaska but not soo much in the winter.. I could just stay home or go back to San Diego..

that's what my family says.. well they don't think i'm all that funny.. My aunt told me that she's giving me two more years before she starts looking for a husband for me herself.. jeez, doesn't she know how fast two years can go?.. I think maybe Colorado will be my best bet.. i'm gonna keep an eye on Craigslist for a gig for the next few months..

And this would make a difference how? Can't pin down the wind

Good luck with your choices. Personally, I'd like to spend more time in Washington state. Been several times but never long enough.

After Africa, you may want to settle down for about a week and have some creature comforts. :);)

If you stop by here in VA, I will be around. I have a wonderful guest area for you and you can see my house decorated. I wish you could meet me in UT in July to see my son off to Hawaii. I'll be there for 2 days, then back again in August. So, tell me when you plan to be around my neck of the woods. There are lots of places to work and shoot here, you won't get bored. I can see you would love West Virginia and the Shenandoah Mountains. Just go south a little and you are already at the beaches. Go north some more and you will be in New England. Boston is wonderful. The sky's the limit for you, my dear. Just tell us what you want to do. I'm sure taking some time with Abby is most important now. Earn a lot of money for your trip, sounds like you'll need it, I just read the last post. WOW.

My goodness - a gypsy like me! I feel a bond! I get home and start planning my next trip... dragging my husband and son with me. (he actually asked if I could schedule time for him to work this year!)

I always try to go somewhere new, at least for part of the trip...

Alaska is fabulous but I wouldn't go in the winter....
Caribbean is perfect int he winter... (it is where I live) and easy for you to get home for Christmas...

Can you go further afield? One of the best trips I have ever been on - and believe me I have been in alot of countries (as I mentioned in another thread - my son is now at 57 countries - he's 10) is

BHUTAN.

Someone asked me once if I had ever found a country I would go back to before going somewhere new... I said no... well... Bhutan is somewhere I would go back to... just for the flight in alone...

You could fly from Dubai to Bangkok then take Druk Air into Paro - or you can fly into Calcutta and do India and Bhutan:) .

This (http://www.peregrinefund.org/default.asp) seems a cool place to visit ... and maybe you could do some volunteering there. Be a nice change from POTN and waitressing ;-)

Uh, you do realize that she's talking about moving again, not visiting. With Sari it's hard to tell the difference. But she's talking about relocating.

yep.. but we were all aware of the expense before we signed on.. so, that aspect of it is under control.. I like the idea of Virginia... and I like my sister.. in ten minute incriments. I'm afraid she would put gum in my hair, lock me in the closet or the adult equivilant if we ever lived in the same area again.. I really do like the idea of New England and have for some time.. decisions.. decisions..

I would love to go to that part of the world.. but, I'm needing a place to spend between four and six months.. that would be a vacation.

I've been there Dave. Good suggestion.. a little too close to home but, i'll go check it out on my next day off.. Maybe take your 400mm with me.. ;)

correct Chris. I'm not planning a vacation.. I need to decide where i'm going to spend the winter.. I really don't think I can stay home through the winter.. I think i'll get way too bored..

I love the North Carolina idea.. I wonder how hard it is to find gigs.. Has anybody got an idea of what New Orleans is like these days?.. a while ago I was thinking about it and heard it was still a bit too rough... I'd love to shoot there..

Bartenders and wait staff are in serious demand here...this is tourist land...the best part of here is the snow is on top of the mountains...so you can ski if you want...or take scenic pics...but you don't have to shovel 20' drifts to get out your front door.

And I just happen to know of a 1 BR condo rental right on one of the mountains of which Wool speaks . . .

Which we own (the condo, not the mountain, alas).

Boy, that's a tough decision, Sari. But I think you should follow your wandering spirit while you are young and unattached to anyone (or thing).

Hawaii is great anytime of the year..you could island hop every few weeks until you have been to them all.

Also, French Polynesia is wonderful...Tahiti, Moorea (my personal favorite), Bora Bora.....all so breathtakingly beautiful.

I don't live anywhere within safe driving distance to any relatives of mine. It's the "You're the youngest, shut up, you know nothing" syndrome. I've lived with it for too long, so I avoid my family when it's not for fun. So, I understand. Remember to follow your heart, and that may mean to live "thoughtfully" for awhile instead of where the wind blows or where you may find a good adventure, unfortunately. Concentrate on Africa and that may lead you to where you want to see next.

North Carolina.. I could really think up worse places to go to.. it's definately pretty enough.. Has enough of it's original diversity and culture to be interesting.. jobs are easy there huh?.. I should Craigslist it and see what's in the offering.. hmm... I'm definately not up for living in five feet of snow again but, I sure do like the idea of getting to pick and choose... This could be a real possibility.. and the condo sounds wonderful... me living in the mountains of North Carolina for a few months would work I think.. definately enough new shots to take..

Sari - North Carolina has a lot of humidity (at least in the summer time, no clue about winter)... you have been in San Diego and Idaho where the air is pretty dry... Going over to the east coast might be a bit of a shock...

Scott - the Blue Ridge is not like the lowlands. Where we are (at 4000 ft), it's rare that the temp. goes over 80 in summer. Check out the current forecast (http://www.averyweather.com/Forecast/Sugar+Mountain). Highs near 70 on the weekend? I can deal with that!

I think it's all part of the experience.. I wouldn't want to go all the way to North Carolina to have it feel just like Boise.. the point is to change.. I like the idea of it though.. there doesn't seem to be a lot of jobs, living expenses aren't too extreme there pretty similar to here..

Don't quit your day job! You have no hope of becoming a weather person. Humidity in the mountains isn't a big issue as a rule. In fact, we deal with very low humidity most of the time. Nice try Scott.

Heh, you sound like me. There's nothing wrong with itchy feet. ;) In the past month I've been to England, Virginia, Rhode Island and Florida. In the past 10 years I've lived in England, Florida, Virginia and Wisconsin. There's something about discovering new places first hand.

But to the best part, where to spend winter? I've put some thought to this, as I've made some really amazing new friends who've invited me to visit them in St. Kitts in the Virgin Islands. I can't think of a better place to winter, and the photography possibilities are endless! Plus, the guy is a dive instructor with his own company. So Sari, if you ever want a wandering photography friend, I'm always up for a trip (I say as I frown at a suitcase full of dirty clothes - just got off the plane from Atlanta about 2 hours ago). ;)
