I’ve noticed that we have more than 20 members in Michigan & with Ohio, Sarnia & Ontario not too far away, I’d like to purpose another group get-together at Waterford Hills Road Racing on August 26th (Sunday). I’ve picked this date 'cause Sunday is a class & feature race schedule, where Sat is only practice & class races.
However, the passes will be good for the entire weekend, so arrangements can be made for members who would like to come on Saturday and/or can’t come on Sunday.

It’s an excellent track for photography & you can get very close to the cars. Even a 18-55mm kit lens will produce some nice shots. Anything longer is great.
This is club racing so you’ll see a great variety of cars, but probably not any “big time” iron, but you never know who might show up to test a car. Note that this is a RAIN OR SHINE event. (Bring your rain tires, I mean tyres… I mean gear.)

As a bonus, they are also having a “Mopars on the Hill Car Show”, which should let you see some interesting Detroit Iron.

We’ll have access to the pits again .Supervised children under 12 are welcome in the pits, but liability releases will have to be signed by the parents for all children entering that area." You'll have to sign one for yourself, too. No releases are needed for the spectator area, & children aren't allowed on the corners of course.
We’ll also be able to shoot from the pit barriers & some of the flag stations at the corners if you would like to. Downside to this will an early meeting with the Chief Steward for a mandatory safety lecture, probably about 9AM, but that time won’t be confirmed ‘till the week before the event.

Practice starts at 10AM & racing at 10:25AM. If someone would like to arrive later than the “early meeting group” I can try to meet you at a later time.
There is a picnic area & concession stand inside of turn 3, so you have options. While there are stands for spectators at points around the track, I’d suggest that your own lawn chair might be more comfortable. ;-) Be advised that there aren’t many areas that offer shade.

Total cost per person should be $5 & I think we’ll get the same rate as last year. Payment will be at the track, so there’s no problem if you say you want to go & something comes up in the meantime.

Just to be sure... you mean to say I'll need to attend the safety meeting at 9am (exact time pending) in order to have access to the prime shooting locations? Just want to make sure. Also, would a tripod be too much for this sort of gig, or should i scoop up a monopod before then? (or are niether really necissary?)

Do they race later in the day? I haven't been to Waterford in years...Last time I went, it was with a car group and the track officals let us run a couple of laps, great fun!

They'll probably run to between 5-6PM. Your pass is good for Saturday, too, so you could go on your own.

Any clue what that might be or have a link to a track in GR? If anyone else is thinking of going out Saturday, chime in so I know if I might be a loaner!

Unfortunately, I can't make it anymore. :( I'm planning a group photo/picnic for a local car club, and after much debate, the best date possible for everyone is Aug 26th. I hope to be able to make it to the next meet to see some of you guys! have fun!

Damn - talk about bad timing. I'll actually be right across the river from Detroit that weekend, but I'm there (Windsor) to help my girlfriend move. Not a huge drive from there, but just the same, too much for the schedule. I'll keep my eyes peeled for this next year!

Can't wait to see more photos from this event. I've missed now for the second year in a row due to other scheduled events. I still ended up shooting a first time motorsport in Grattan. I'll probably post some bike shots on the Motorsports forum when I get through them.
