A nice big hairy caterpillar about 5cm long... Not sure what species it exactly is but since there's a few of them around I guess I'll find out when I'm plagued by flying adults in spring ;)

I have to say it doesn't have the nicest looking face... sort of looks like it's tail end should... LOL

I didn't notice till I zoomed in. I guess caterpillars have them too?

Some hairy caterpillars can cause skin irritation if handled. Is it the barbs that cause it?

Quite possible. I don't generally handle any with hairs like this for that very reason.

Wow! He's cool lookin'. those hairs are interesting, looks like they could be painful.
