I am wondering if the photographer has Knocked-out the bird and digitally blurred the background. The border between the edge of the bird's feathers and the background appears suspect to me. I am not certain of this.

That would be a mighty fine job he did, if he did that. :P

I think there's something come loose in his lens as it's clearly taking double exposures

In my humble opinion, that picture is definitely shopped (click on it to get full size that I blew up and look at edges):

Or oversharpened

I think if it was oversharpened you would see it around the eye. What I see on th edge is the results of a bad selection.

To be honest, i hadnt even thought of it being PS'ed. I guess it's more then likely a possibility, quiet frankly i dont like the photo, it just does not look right heh.

I don't think that the background has been replaced. It is quite possible to get results like that with a 500mm wide open. None of the other photos in his gallery show evidence of background enhancement. I think that he deserves credit for a fine photo.

You're all dreaming :o it's definitely 'normal
The funny artifacts around the bird are from jpeg compression-and you can't see the same thing around it's eye because there is no light background for them to show against

what does it matter if its shopped. Dont all of you 'shop' your pics??? Looks mighty fine to me. Whether its 'shopped' or not. Just my 2 pence.

I have no problem with shopping. I do it too. I did similar work on this picture because the background was too much in focus:

My point is that the Bokeh is not natural which was the premise of the original post. That is all.

It is possible to get that effect straight from the camera.

It was taken using my old 100-300 lens. I got as close as I could to the peacock and just fired the shots :)
Settings were :
Shooting Mode : Shutter Speed Priority AE
Shutter Speed: 1/320
F number : 7.1
Metering Mode : Partial
ISO Speed : 100

If you want to try this you don't even have to take any photo's!
Just focus at about the distance you would usually be from the bird and without refocusing, try looking at anything to see if it makes a potential good background :D

I thought this picture I took in my back yard came out with a pretty "creamy" bokeh. I don't have the exif data handy, but it was using my 70-200mm f/4L at 200mm. I used a fairly high ISO (800 I think) to freeze it, so I did run it through NeatImage. Big image, so click it to get the non-resized version.

By the way, do these qualify as "justabirds"? :)
