View Full Version : Confusion about aperture/f-stop/DOF

I'm a little confused here about these.

Read at somewhere..

f-stop value = lens length / aperture (opening)

so lets say I've a 50mm f/1.8

at f/1.8 the aperture will be 50mm/1.8 =27.77mm and f/8 will be 50/8.0 = 6.25.

So does that means that with bigger aperture, the DOF will be shallower? and small aperture..higher DOF?

Yes. You've got it right. :)

Just to be sure we mean the same thing... :D

Bigger physical aperture diameter = lower f-stop value = more shallow DOF
