Another major update to my website

www.cmuntean.net

I added some more stuff there.

I could use some feedback though... Do you like: the colors, the design, ease of navigation, speed, overall look.

Thank you.

hi chris, I just wanted to say that what I really like about your site design is the manner each image opens to the next. Also, being an ex Evanstonian I liked looking at the images of the flood plain.

I think I would get rid of the transitions between photos, as it does slow things down a bit. That or somehow have thumbnails, because if someone likes the 5th picture in, clicking next 5 times each time could get cumberson. Other than that I love your macro shots of flowers. Perhaps posting the settings and what lenses, etc that you used on each pic would be helpful to other users?

it's funny.... That transition effect is the thing that people usually like most about my website (including me). Also, adding thumbnail would require me to basically recode the entire javascript viewer. But it's not gonna be too many pictures anyway. I'll just have my very best in the main galleries, and the other stuff in my "other galleries"
As for the flower pictures, you need a somewhat fast lens (prefferably macro lens) to get a good shallow DOF, and that's about it.... maybe a tripod.

Chris:
Like the looks of the site, as far as you have gotten. One thing ... maybe you should add a button to navigate back to your main galleries page from within the galleries. Locate it near the next or previous pic button. By the way, I like how you have anchored those two buttons and don't have them floating with the pix as they do on some sites.
cheers,
jim

Jim,
Thank for that suggestion... I'm ll do that one of these days. I'm probably going to have to put it on the bottom somewhere as it's a table array over there.... I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the input.

a softer blue color? its quite hard on the eyes.

in your graphics design package you should be able to pull the slider down more toward the white ... that may work

other than that nice layout

I would think either a lot darker or a lot lighter. This baby blue color just doesn't cut it IMHO.

.... how about the type of blue like the one in the Windows XP welcome page (or similar) ?

checked out your website. Looks good. Color a bit unusual for a photo gallery site. Navigation ok.

Many great shots in the galleries. I also like most of the navigation, but the only way to tell how many pics in each is the small counter ie:( 7 of 17 ) on the bottom and no way to go directly to a favorite shot to show someone. Maybe thumbnails on the page or shot #'s across top or bottom that can be pointed at to jump to that photo. Personally I'm not crazy about the transitions between photos, but that's just me.
Keep up the good work.

thank you :)

B_uzz, I totally agree with you. I have to do something about that script to be able to jump to certain pictures.... I'd LOVE to see thumbnail, but I'd hate to double my work needed to share pictures online. I'll see what I can do about that.

...I didn't have much time to update my website lately. Heck, I didn't even change the color :?

cmM!

Nice job on your website, thus far!

Q: How does one learn to create such a site.... and I have that same question for the other forum folks who have them.

How did you learn to do that kind of thing?

I'm inclined to just join one of the 'canned' sites... where I think allot of them look pretty good, actually.

Comments/replies appreciated...

Thanks...

How does one learn to create such a site

Well, my site is combined HTML, Flash, and a JavaScript (for viewing the pics).

The HTML part is easy... you can learn the basics in half a day ;)

The Flash part... well I installed flash on my computer, pressed F1, learned some, then went and asked some speciffic questions, got sent to some other tutorials on the web, and was able to make those flash animations (the "galleries" page for example).

The Java part....that's a little more complicated (for me at least). The javascript I downloaded for free from one of those source-code download websites, but I changed it quite a bit since its original shape.

My website is quite simple... nothing fancy (as far as coding)

I pretty much hard-coded the whole thing, but you can also use website creators and stuff like that.

Good luck.... I still have to change the damned color

well, personally I think your use of flash is pointless, its nothing you cannot do with a static page. Yeah the color is pretty old school, its like flashback to the websafe days or something.

Lastly the layout is pretty plain, just about everyone in here uses photoshop, its obvious you know the html pretty well, gather it with your css skills, actually design a site in photoshop, cut it up...put it back together, and you have something to impress people...

but...I noticed most people in here just was something to get the job done...so its personal pref in the end i guess

Just had a look around and I thought it was good, I like the way it is quite clean and simple easy to get arround. The background colour was ok but I can see what the other people are getting at. The only other thing is that it might have been nice to have thumb nail pics to link to the photographs, with the number of pics it was ok as it is but if there was more it might be better with a link to them. Quite like the dislove between photos, but think it might have been better with just one or maybe two different types.

I am wanting to get a web site started, (when I find the time) so I always enjoy looking at other sites for ideas, look forward to coming back and see how it has developed
