Yeah, I'm the new guy...

Hey all! Just joined up yesterday. I've been doing quite a bit of reading around the forums the last few days and I've enjoyed it quite a bit! Great forum!

I'm a total n00b when it comes to photography but with the anticipation of my first child on the way, I bought a nice camera so that I could take some pictures of the small one when he/she is here.

Other than that, I just really like photography. I've always wanted to get into it and kind of used the child as a justification to myself. Shame on me!!

Anyway, my photography interests are mainly outdoor shooting and performing arts (concerts, band promo shots). I'd like to get into landscapes, portraits, sports, and some macro stuff as far as outdoor stuff goes.

Any general tips?

welcome!! I hope you enjoy POTN as much as the rest of us.. and congrats on the baby coming along.. great photo ops with those little people.. My advice would be first to pick up a 50mm 1.8 it's less than a hundred bucks brand new and will really give you a better understanding of DOF and some of the benefits to a DSLR.. Read your manual.. Truly page by page with your camera.. there's great stuff in there and almost any question you may have you can find. and if not ask POTN... were a friendly bunch most of us know a thing or two about what were doing and if we don't somebody else can fill in the gap. Be patient with yourself and with the camera. there is a learning curve I'd suggest starting out with AV and TV modes before trying it in full manual.. but, get outa the green box.. good luck and have fun.
