Very interesting. I'll admit part of why I've been looking at just using Photoshop CS and not C1 was due to all the issues the recent 3.5 release brought up (upgrade confusions, C1 Rebel being discontinued, LE losing 16 bit support then regaining it, etc).

It looks like the market has spoken, and Phase One is working hard to address the concerns and keep its customers happy.

It is noce that they listen.. and good for them to offer the free upgrade!

They need really badly to clean up their code, though.

The 3.5 and 3.5a release are almost complete re-writes, and the code quality shows it. A number of folks are trying to re-install the previous versions, so they can get on with their professional lives.

It's not pretty...

Is their updated 3.5 (3.5a as you referred to it) out now?

The 3.5a was the re-release of the LE code with 16-bit, and noise sliders re-instated.

P1 has stated that they are working on a 3.5.1 update (which wasn't released as of late last night, the last time I was able to get into their hammered forums site -- max 50 users, and it knocks you out -- sheesh), which is supposed to fix some bugs.

Which bugs, when? It's anybody's guess. One of things that some forum members are clamoring for is for P1 to post their reported/comfirmed bugs list, and publish a list of changes/bugs fixed when they release new code. That has never been done in the past, and some folks have been pretty upset to believe that P1 was working on their pet bug, only to find out it was never addressed when the long-awaited for release occurred.

P1 has *lots* of customer-related issues to deal with. Giving away 3.5 for free won't fix any of them. That they believe that it will somehow patch things up with their user community indicates just how far out of touch they are.

A major problem is that in P1's rush to meet the self-imposed release deadline, they did not address many of the problems raised by their own beta testers during the test period. (This was confirmed by a beta tester.) They should have finalized the product and then announced the new version. Yet they have already announced another major upgrade (v4.0) for October. How can they possibly know it will be ready by then?

Yes, v3.5a is buggy. The EXIF data is screwy and incomplete (either that or my 10D suddenly has spot metering.) The blooming green/yellow problem for 10D and D-Reb images was fixed with a workaround (new profile), but now saturated reds get clipped. Arbitrary rotation was delayed until the June update, though previously promised in this version. There are many more issues mentioned on the support forum.

But it remains the best converter out there IMHO, and the workflow can't be beat. Despite my earlier rants, I've actually decided to upgrade to SE from LE, and purchase the 5 upgrade package too!

My condolences go with you.

In the meantime, I've registered for a PhotoShop workshop wherein I'll get the skivvy on how to use the new ACR in CS. Maybe with a bit more familiarity, I'll be in a better position to say 'goodbye' to C1, until they get their act together.
