Let's see what's people's verdict.

I forgot to include the last option: "300D users are crazy". But you are always welcome to vote it in your own words ;)

I don't have a 300D, but if I did, I'd probably wait a bit to see how it worked for others. If OK, then I'd hack away!

Correction, 300D users that use the hack are crazy

I am not and never will :!:

is there only one person in the whole world who works on hacking 300D?

i guess not but not everyone likes to share it over the internet,

people might be scared that canon takes them to court or something? :?

Jemmind

I am scared to because what if you installed it and then something happened to the camera? What if you couldn't change back to the original software(or firmware or whatever it is called), and Canon wouldnt fix it because of that?
Once my manufacturer's warantee is out, I might consider it then.

I would consider it but I don't even know what the hacked firmware is all about. What are the advantages?

Yup, pretty much my thoughts. By that time I'll probably have a 1DMKIII :P

AzzKicker

Not sure if I'll do it or not. I plan to get the 10D's replacement anyway when it comes out.

I like it!! I ever used the embedded jpeg and being able to decrease it to small, normal I increased my CF Card capacity by 15%. I am also interested in trying the mirror lockup, but havn't gotten to it yet. Now I wish some one would create a hack so the LCD would display a larger histogram after taking a shot!!

I have Best Buys 4 yr service plan on the camera so if it dies I just take it back and get a new camera. The techs are too stupid to figure that it was the firmware. No questions asked!

I've got the bb thing too, but only 1 year I think. I was just gonna wait till it expired and go for the hack.

They dont sell a one yr service plan!!! Only a four year!

You get one yr from Canon.

Loaded it up....tried it out....went back to the previous hack.

FEC still works well...moving to Jump from Set was OK...not a huge difference

3200 ISO...OK, neat idea. Would like to keep that option.

PA-1 - ONEShot
PA-2 - AIservo (dosn't work right now)
PA-3 - AIfocusAF

Couldn't see the difference...but will trust it works.

Mirror Lock-up...the reason I am deleting the hack. Push the button in any program mode and the mirror locks up for a second then the shutter releases. Nice concept, but no way to turn it off other than to go into automatic mode. Suddenly the camera starts to feel like a Point and Shoot digital where one has to anticipate a shot to account for the delay. NO THANKS.

So until the Mirror lock up can be turned off and on, I'll stick to having FEC only.

It can be turned on and off, in the Custom Functions menu.

Yep---figured that our reading the dpreview forums. Back to the latest and greatest hack. Can't wait until he get the A!-Servo function figured out. :D

I am still hanging on my G3 (and shooting JPEGs), hoping that in next Photokina Canon would come up with new 300D that would have all the same functionality as G3 with the benefits from manual zoom (with decent response time), optical viewfinder (which in G3 is joke), etc. as a nice bonus.
While that hack would probably add all missing functionality into current 300D, its still a hack and I am happy to use it as an excuse for postponing the camera upgrade and worries about dirt in CMOS (while hiking in forests), shutter repairs, etc.:)

Excellent point. I bought my Rebel at Future Shop, which is the Canadian version of Best Buy... I have the same coverage as you; I think I'll give it a shot too.

Couldn't agree more!

OT: I like your equation (1Ds - s + 299 = 300D) but it contains an error. Should be (1Ds / s) + 299 = 300D

(now you're another one looking for me with the Hickory axe handle...;-)

It pretty much says it in the numbers..........out of 16 people who have tried the hack..........only 1 is not happy.

Loaded it up....tried it out....went back to the previous hack.

But then he figured out how to undo MLU and he's happy again!!!.

Yep---figured that our reading the dpreview forums. Back to the latest and greatest hack. Can't wait until he get the A!-Servo function figured out.

So........is it safe to say that there is a 100% satisfaction with the hack??

I harbor no delusions about turning my Rebel into a 10D, but I installed the hack and use several of the features routinely. I am very pleased with it. Looking forward to using the MLU feature as I have had a couple of long shutter speed shots that didn't work out because of mirror vibration.

msvadi

I find it interesting that the number of people who use the hack and the number of people who don't trust it are almost equal. Probably, I hadto put one more option "No, I'm happy with the 300D the way it is".

Great point. It's interesting to me that this is the "only" hack I have seen around the internet. You would have thought many others with these skills might have picked up on it. More to follow I am sure. As for me I am waiting till I understand the advanced features already available in the DReb before I add more to the learning curve.

msvadi
4th of June 2004 (Fri), 22:00
okay, I switched the camps. My drebel now runs the hacked firmware. I could not resist "one-shot" and MLU. FEC and RAW+large/fine JPEG are nice too (probably, majority uses this feature other way around, and sets it to RAW+small JPEG).

Conk

I would like to install the "hack", but if for any reason I had to send the camera in for warranty, and the reason I had to send it in kept me from uploading the original firmware back to the camera, I would be screwed. I have 3 years on my D-Rebel. I just don't feel like I could take that risk.

i have the hack installed and am very pleased with it. I have had no problems except occasionally forgetting about MLU :x

anyone else find it odd that the poll results don't add up to 100% ?

so far the 67 votes add up to 97% :?

I've changed camp now as well. No probs sp far, but only about 40 shots taken. The One Shot AF is lovely :D

As for the poll results: It's just rounding errors:

20 29.41176471
1 1.470588235
27 39.70588235
20 29.41176471
68 100

Okay, time for a stupid newbie question. I've installed the 1.11 firmware
update, and I've set FEC for the SET button, and I've enabled mirror
lock-up.

Can someone tell me what to expect from all this? I turned on the camera and pressed the SET button. The display screen illuminated the
-2..1..|..1..2 thingy that I assume allows you to set FEC. How should I use this option?

As for mirror lock-up, now that it's enabled, what can I expect to happen when I take a picture?

Thanks for any and all help. I hope to tinker around with the other custom settings as soon as I get these two things squared away.

Scroll wheel to adjust the FEC.

MLU has a delay (1/2 second?) after you push the shutter before the picture is taken.

I have 3 years on my D-Rebel. I just don't feel like I could take that risk.

Thats exactly whats keeping me from installing the hack to my dRebel as well... Once that warranty bites the dust, and these hacks are still available, I might be interested.

I asked Canon Denmark about the consequences of using the firmware hack and the response is clear:

The warranty is void and service on a 300D with the hacked firmware will be rejected.

If Canon Denmark have this opinion other countries may well have same opinion so just be aware that You reinstall the original firmware before sending the camera for service.

Please don't shoot the messenger.

Well, I've tried it, and I like it. I use the FEC and mirror lock up the most. Absolutely no problem with anything.

It's too bad Canon doesn't have a plan where you can download each extra feature for a small fee. I'd spend $30 on several add-on firmware options if they offered it. Make it like a music download site.

theoldmoose
7th of June 2004 (Mon), 14:46
Yeah, and just like a music download site, Canon would only sell a few. Everyone else would just get copies from their friends or from some file-sharing service.

Canon is not populated by dummies, unlike the music industry.
