I am looking for a program that will download my photos from a card reader on a Mac. I use to use Downloader by BreezeSys on my XP machine but am currently using a Mac laptop. Any suggestions based on your use would be helpful.

***Update - I am running the latest edition of OSX. My main goal is to be able to shoot in RAW mode and then be able to download and retreive all of the EXIF data. I have been very spoiled by BreezeBrowser and Downloader. Has anyone used these applications with Virtual PC for Mac?***

Thank you all!

which operating system? 9.x or 10.x ("X", Jaguar, panther etc).

I'm not sure what's available for OS 9, but in X you can use the included "Image Capture" software. that's what I use and I find it great. you can get it to embed a RGB to each pic as it downloads and rotate individual shots.

To get it to launch every time you plug in your CF card open Image capture (found in the applications folder) and go to it's preferences menu.

from there click the Camera tab and set it to open when you connect a camera. it will also open when you plug your CF card into your card reader.

hope that helps.

regards,

Good topic -- this is good to know! I'm an OS X user myself and since I got the DRebel, I've been wanting to mess around with RAW. I have Photoshop CS, but that's a huge undertaking in itself....

image capture is great, also iPhoto which comes with OSX does a great job, it imports every batch n sort them into albums, or "roll", but i don't usually use them, just simply drag them onto my desktop n sort them out afterwards.

way to get inages off a card. iphoto will also work, but i find that it is a little slow and unprdictable with RAW files. I just use image capture. If you want to spend some money for organization, portfolio works great and with full RAW support

Here's another vote for iPhoto. I use it because it's easy, quick and I can very quickly sort through a shoot since it auto-rotates any portrait-format pics (with great thumbnail size control). I used to use iView Media Pro a lot but since the upgrade to iPhoto version 4.0.1, I find that does everything I need. And now it can handle big libraries speedily unlike before. So iPhoto + Photoshop CS covers the job for me.

I prefer to use iView Media pro for image management and cataloging etc. I've been using it for a couple versions without a problem. And it supports the new CR2 files as well.

SmithPhoto, I just put a CF card into my firewire card reader and it appears instantly in OSX finder. The photos can be selected and placed anywhere after that.
My usual routine is to drag the photos to the desktop and check them out in Photoshop's file browser.
The firewire card reader is fast and flawless with RAW files. You don't actually need a "programme" to get stuff into the finder from your card reader, this function provided by the OS.

Canon's new EVU (replaces FVU) now appears to handle downloads much better and since OSX supports PTP (picture transport protocol) it looks like some of the functionality of BB. I also use iView but the combo of EVU and PSCS's browser/organizer capability might come close for file management. EVU is also supposed to be faster at converting raw files than FVU was. I haven't downloaded EVU yet but it's supposedly on the Canon site and free...

Question: I downloaded the new EVU but when I tried to install it I got an error. i have the FVU installed so that's not the problem. I am running Mac OS 10.3.2 and yes, I downloaded the mac os X version. any ideas how I can get it to work? where did you download it from?

cheers

So you're not shooting RAW, right? AFAIK, iPhoto won't recognize Canon RAW files as "photos." I'd be happy to hear differently as I've been trying to adjust my workflow to start shooting RAW with my new DRebel.

I installed Canon's FVU today and I already have Photoshop CS.

I only just downloaded it now ( from http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/evu.html ) and if it installs OK I'll let you know - if not, I'll be in the same boat

I'll bet that the error he's getting is if he hasn't already installed the initial software from the EOS Digital Solution CD. The installer on Canon's site is an updater, not a full installer.

I've had my 10D for 5 days! Upgraded from D30.

i am aware of the fact that it is an updater, not a full install. As I understand it if you already have canon's File Viewer utility it will update that. I have that installed, but maybe it isn't a new enough version - AJSJones, what version of the older FVU do you have? mine is 1.3.1.8.

this is the error I get:
http://www.arumdevil.com/stuff/pics/photo/error1.gif

followed by:
http://www.arumdevil.com/stuff/pics/photo/error2.gif

My system is dual 1gig G4, 1.25GB RAM, OSX 10.3.2.

any ideas?

thanks :)

The extra information is helpful. Whenever someone says "it didn't work" with no details, it's impossible to help much. :)

My old FVU was version 1.3.2.

Since the installer is crashing on you, you might want to first try using Disk Utility to repair (First Aid) the drive, if you haven't tried that already.

"AJSJones, what version of the older FVU do you have? mine is 1.3.1.8. "

Luckily I could fish it out of the trash !

It was 1.2.1.13

Looks like yours is more recent than mine!

Can't think of anything not already suggested!

I tried repairing permissions with disk utility but I still get the same error :( I also tried from a different user account but no luck......... I will try on an iBook running the same system later. thanks for your help anyway - if anyone comes up with anything please let me know.

Try Graphic Converter. (http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/graphcon.htm). I have been trying everything else but gradually am using Graphic Converter more and more. It has good browsing, shows all the EXIF data, no-nonsense slide show facilities. There's no one thing that makes it the best (except maybe batch processing) but the fact that it does everything pretty well, keeps me using it. All the others (iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, iView, ACD, Curator, Canon's stuff...) have particular facilities which are missing or poor.

I download pics to my hard disk via a firewire card reader. I have been using PSCS for conversion of RAW to TIFF because it runs faster than FVU on my computer and it has real time preview of any adjustments that have been made. I use FVU usually only for extracting the JPEG from the raw file. I have a G4 DP 533 with 1.5 gb of ram running 10.3.4. I just downloaded the new EVU (in the last 5 minutes) and it installed without errors and runs. I will try to play with it in a few days and see how it performs compared to PSCS. Below is the link I downloaded from

http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/evu_osx_101.html

Thank you all!

I just use Finder to copy and paste from the card reader to the hard drive.
