I am behind. I have a boxing card from June 1 that I haven't put up yet ... but this was easier. I was allowed one song. I have finally asked my boss to consider putting a rider in the contracts to just leave me alone. He's going to think about it but says his experience is that the tour manager will not get the word and it will just cause yet another area of contention ... and most of these guys get so much crap from most venues that they aren't in any mood to be reasonable. Which brings me to something I learned at Paulina Rubio (in the pipeline and worth seeing the pictures!) which is that A LOT of venues are very difficult for the talent's production people to work with and that the casino is one of the exceptions. Something I hadn't ever considered!
Anyway, on with the show ... between the smoke and the LED panel the lighting wasn't to my liking:

Now that I have shot RAW for a while I am beginning to feel that noise is much more noticable ... anybody else agree or disagree? Rene?

Nice shots Dwight. Alot different to my much closer photos, but it definatly works and gives a lot of stage atmosphere. I like it! esp #6.
#5 looks a bit OoF though, or is that just my eyesight finally losing its 20/20 ability :)
Loving the colour in the dry ice around the bottom.
But more noise in RAW? That just doesnt make sense to me? They're much less compressed files so the noise should be less than jpeg...?
How strange.

(p.s hows that for more posting?)

Well, thanks for your feedback, Tipsy. Glad you haven't been washed away. :-) I may try shooting an even in RAW+L and compare for noise if I get a chance.

Thats a good idea that, i've got a gig on the 6th that needs a fast turnaround ( about 6 hours to be precise as i go on holidy where there is no net to email the snaps off) so i'll be working through the night and shooting jpeg aswell would help me be much more selective of what to process to save time. And it'll give me a nice comparison.
Getting close to washing away!

The very first impression I get from this great set is the atmosphere and action...
These pics make it obvious that Chayanne commands great stage presence, and is enthusiastically received by the audience...#5 is a great example of this...
The stage set up isn't too shabby either... The elaborate LCD backdrop doesn't bother me that much at all... It exemplifies the different designs/themes of the various casino shows.:D
I've had some grain issues, but only because of long dark shadows and limiting low light...

I think they are great! I like the mixture of whole stage and single performer shots. Of course you and Rene' are my idols.
Still looking for that 1D mkII or 1DmkIIN!!
Keep up the good stuff

Well, I'm pleased that you think it was OK, John, but when I finally get Paulina Rubio uploaded you'll see what I expect to get at every show.

Thanks, Michael, I always try to ensure that I divide up short shooting limits between close to the stage and back from the sound/light boards.

One song is tough...
It shows: Certainly not bad, but not world class either.
Don't think I would have managed in one song ;)

Nice job, especially for one song.
It shows you don't need to shoot the entire set in order to get what you are paid to get. I'm finding my capture rate is going down as my work load goes up. There is just no need to go through 1200 images to get 10. I'm getting much better at seeing the image, knowing when I've got it and calling it a wrap..or is it rap?
Anyway my point is your professional ability lets you still succeed when the circumstances are not perfect.....that more than anything is what makes a pro....it is about getting the shot when you have the chance. You got more here than what you are being paid to capture, very nice.

Thanks guys ... yes, it is possible to get the job done, minimally in one song, but that's not my only goal.
Just got back from a weekend shooting paintball and I am all sticky from the splatter ... along with a few welts, sigh! Trying to catch up, again.

Wow Dwight. Some awesome full stage shots there. I really need to work on my wide angle skills. I seem to nail the closeups, but can never get the WA working.
And all in one song! :D

Looks pretty good to me, but it can be hard to tell at web resolution too.
You might find that the JPG processing in the camera was supressing the noise more than your RAW default does. I recall back when i made the "switch" that images seemed softer. I figured out later is was just the cameras processing. The RAW advantages still far outweight the bad IMO.

I start at the front, stage left, with 300mm on one body and 70-200mm on the other. Shoot, move to middle aisle, shoot, back up middle aisle to lightboard, where I can get the full stage at 70mm, the move up the risers and behind/above the lightboard for more full stage from higher angle. When I shoot one or two songs I know exactly what I am going to do. At three songs I then wander where it looks good. At unlimited I just shoot from everywhere over and over. So, no WA involved usually ... but if I am not allowed to back away or if I shoot all night I put either/both 16-35mm and 15mm fisheye (and I now have 8mm Sigma fisheye but haven't used it much yet.) It may be time for me to do another Q&A since things have changed a lot since my first one.

I don't mean specifically WA lens, just full stage shots.
I have shot full stage shots with my 70-200 from the back of the auditorium, but still get nothing like you do :(
