some nice captures, good timing, and nice use of panning. I think 4 is really good.

needs work on the white balance.

Hey Ross, Welcome to the forums.

DavidEB is correct.

When you are doing hockey before you shoot the game. Take your first photo of the ice and then use that for the custom WB setting in your camera. You will need to read in your 20D manual on how to set that up.

Your Ice will come out looking white instead of the yellow cast as it is here.

The 100-400 lens is a great lens itself but it's tooooo slow for shooting hockey. You want to be anywhere from 1/500 up to 1/1000 for the caliber of hockey you are shooting.

You have to pay for decent glass but you will turn out very nice photos of hockey shots!

This is the color of ice you really want for your shots.

I love the contrast in #4 between the blurred goalie and the sharp skater!

Welcome, Ross.
Lovely 1st post shots!

Great timing. I love the anticipation that accompanies #2 and #6.

Thanks for all the comments guys, and I know what you mean about the colour of the ice in the shots, its something I hope to improve on when the new season starts in September.

Unfortunately at the moment a new piece of glass is out the question (just bought a 30D to make my 20D back up) so need to start saving again!

Cant believe I have only just found these forums, think the advice and comments from you guys is invaluable, thanks.

Metalman1010 can I ask which lens you are using yourself for the Hockey shots? is it your 70-200mm 2.8?

Hi Ross

Some pretty good shots for starters. The white balance is easily sorted in Photoshop especially if you shoot in RAW mode. Here is one of mine from Novembers Blaze match. My RAW images had the same colour as yours, just needs a slight WB adjustment to get white ice.

Fortunately I had just got myself the 70-200 f2.8 lens early last season as Murrayfield is a pretty dark rink, keep up the good work next season and when you get the fast glass you will get some great results. Check out threads by Scott Wiggins to see what is possible in UK rinks.

Maybe see you at the rink sometime (depends on whether they recruit a half decent team this year).

Ross

We started with a 300mm 2.8 IS and a 70-200mm 2.8.

We will be using a 300mm 2.8 Non IS, a 200mm 1.8, a 70-200mm 2.8, and probably a 135 f/2 lens in the fall.

We traded the 300mm 2.8 IS for our 200mm 1.8 because we already had a 300mm 2.8 non IS lens.

For hockey Personally I don't think you need IS (this is my own opinion).

Crawford - Hi mate, well good to see another Caps photographer on here,it was a tough season last year and losing some of the main men in close season they will have to work hard to improve!
Looks like the problem with the WB is more down to the display on the laptop more than my editing, just looking at my shots while I am here at work and its like night and day to be honest!! Well gives me something to sort when I get home in the morning i guess!
I know what you mean about Murrayfield being a dark rink,it really is quite dull there.
No doubt see you around as will be there when work allows next season.

Metalman- thanks for that, well as soon as the cash allows I know what my next purchases are going to have to be!
But have to admit you may be right about IS but I think having it maybe gives you a bit more confidence to step down the shutter speed? Bit like a security blanket for myself anyway.

Cheers

Hiya Ross

Some nice pics of my team in there (Coventry Blaze) - good to see that Trevor made the save in the last pic ;-)

If you ever travel down to away games in Coventry, and fancy having a play with a couple of lenses during the game (300 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/2.8 ), come and find me. I'm usually between the players benches in the 1st & 3rd periods, and up on the photographers gallery in the 2nd. I may even buy you a beer!

Cheers

Mark.
