"YOU SPENT $XXX FOR THAT LENS?? WHY???!!!!"
- If I have a penny everytime I hear that.......
"Oh, here he goes again, taking pictures of people....." (eyes rolling)
Let me be.......let me be..........
"YOU WOKE UP THAT EARLY?? ON A SATURDAY??"
- Yes, oh yes, and its worth it.........
"Why are you carrying that tripod around??"
- Cuz after a certain amount of shutter speed, a camera needs to be stabilized to reduce motion artifacts.
"HUH??"
- Never mind............cuz it looks cooler.
"YOU'RE CRAZY!!!".
- I'm normal!!! I swear.
"B&H, again?? You were just there 2 days ago"
- I know, but this time I need some filters......and I need to look at thier bag collection...........and maybe grab some catalogue.
"You got your news from a photography forum??.............You talk about these people like you know them..............."
- Yes, they're really informative and funny.
"OOOHHHKKAAAYYYYY............" (humming music from the twilight zone"
- You'll never understand.
"Whats there to understand?? You've changed."
- No I haven't, I'm still me.
"Whatever..............you wanna have dinner 2nite??"
- ........Can't..........I want to shoot the sunset and I need to wake up early 2morrow.
"............... ................"
-

:) :)
Yes, I have the same experience.
"That's a big camera. There are smaller ones, right?"
- Oh yes, but it's because of the different lenses you can mount on it and a serious photographer likes some weight.
"That's a lot of money for a camera, can you take videos with that?"
- Uh, no it's just for photography. (you see them thinking that I am totally nuts).
"You drive 150 km for taking some pictures at sea? Why?"
- I am always looking for those special shots'
"What do you mean?"
- Never mind...
But all this doesn't really matter. Its my hobby, its my fun and my way to forget everything and just take pictures. But I know what you mean!

I was telling my wife the other day that I have good friends on these boards and that I spend time here because whenever I speak (type) to them, I learn something new and useful. Everyone wants to see my photos and wants nice prints for their homes, but no one wants to help me take the photos. The amount of complaints and groans I get from friends and family when I take out a camera is amazing.
An interesting note, whenever I go to India to visit family, I photograph everyone and take multiple photographs capturing my entire family in various poses, locations, etc. I go crazy with photos usually. The usual list of complaints come about. Then a few years go by and someone passes away, and then all of a sudden, my photos are in high demand. You won't believe how many photos my father and I have sent to India for people to use to commemorate their loved ones who have passed away.
I always tell people that they will never appreciate a photo taken of them immediately. It is only after a few years or few months that they can look back and see how they were in the past. The longer the time goes by, the more they appreciate me taking their photo.
That makes it worthwhile for me. 8)

the only ones that considder me "nuts" when I walk past them with my camera in the bag and the tripod in my hand are my 73 year old grandmother:
"Are you going to shoot ducks again? Bring one home"
I still haven't found a right answer to this question, so I just nod and keep walking.
Another funny one was at a soccer game a few day ago, someone(irish guy) came to ask after he saw me taking pix with a long lens on a tripod.
"Why are you taking pictures?"
-Just for the hell of it... I'm an amateur
You're not from the INS (immigration and naturalization service), are you ?"

Very, very true and well said!
We've recently had a family bereavement and had to sort through old photos, some going back to 1915. Maybe they were just considered snaps at the time (although I know it took much more effort back then to take even a "snap") but now they're valuable family documents.
I try to *always* have a camera on me. If not my 10D, then my DSC-V1. If not that, then at least my tiny Cybershot. You never know when you're going to capture some person or moment you'll never experience again. Better a low-res photo than no photo at all.
Ummm...sorry to sound a bit sombre. It's what looking at aged photos does to me. In the words of Simon & Garfunkel:
"Long ago it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you"
I would have quoted 'Kodachrome' but I don't use film / Nikons

Asking a great photgrapher what kind of camera he used, is like asking Hemingway what kind of typewriter he used.
I can't type or take photos.

She may be right though. I don't think I'll spend aany more money for a while. Right after I get the Angle Finder C, and some more memory. Oh, and the 100-400 f4L. Oh, and the......

Ah, good song. 8)
I am fortunate enough to have a family who also enjoys photography. My dad likes to walk around with me and come up with ideas (which are usually quite good!), and my mom tried her hand at my old Olympus Monday and seemed to have a good time. :) The only ones who seem to get annoyed when I break out the camera are my cats.

I have some answers:
You paid 1500€ for that lens?!?
Well, you paid 20000€ for that used car which you're going to drive on Finlands salted roads while we have excellent public transportation. By the way, your car will be rusted through in five years.
But heeeeyyy, this is a car!!!
