The first users in Denmark have received Muvo2 players where the MD cannot be used in anything but the player itself.

The last of the usable ones will be off the shelves soon....
You may still find some on E-bay...
What Hitachi/Creative have done is actually make these MD drives with the "CF" interface totally disabled.
Your PC and the Muvo use an IDE interface to communicate.. but any device that relies on a standard CF card interface will NOT be able to use the new dives. :(
Odd choice... sales will plummet for Creative and for Hitachi.. :?

But didn't I recently read somewhere on this forum of Hitachi offering their 4GB microdrives for $200. That seems like a good price and you don't have to break apart a MuVo to get it. 8)

...I've never seen them lower than $400.00 !!!
IF they were selling them for $200.00 I'd buy in a heartbeat! :)
The ones on E-bay selling for $200.00 (or slightly more) are gutted from the Muvo...

I don't think so. I think it was the Muvo2 that was meant.
If Hitachi did offer it for $200 there where absolutely no reason for Creative to lock them. The reason Creative locks them is because Hitachi can't sell the drives for $500 when the Muvo only cost $200.

I suspect Hitachi did the maths and worked out that they can make more profit selling the drives direct than going through Creative.

Sorry to hear that but it was bound to happen sooner or later. Glad I got one when the getting was good.

You can't use the new versions. Maybe You can find the old version still. You can recognize them by the fact that they come with a bag and there is a warning on the new versions telling that the MD cannot be used in cameras.

Some people have been having problems with those Hitachi drives too. I know of at least two that have gone belly up and no chance of any recourse.

You can tell if the Drive will function from a Mucvo pretty easily from the packaging.
When Creative switched to the new non-camera-freindly drive.. it changed the packaging.
two ways to tell:
1. The new Muvo DOES NOT come with a little carrying case.
2. The New Muvo says right on the package that the MD drive installed will not function in other devices
So... if you find an old one in a store.. your good to go. But buying on E-bay just became much more "hazardous" as who knows which version you'll actually get.
As RFM says.. a Microdrive is still a microdrive... and although they are remarkably robust.. they can and in fact do go belly up... I have no idea what the relative failaure rate is compared to CF cards... we used to see a lot of posts about bad Sandisk CF cards last year.. but they have seemingly disapeared...
Bottom line.. 1 gig CFs are now going for $150.00 or even less in the right places...

The new $200 drives that I saw mentioned are coming from Seagate, and they are not allowed to use the name 'Microdrive'. I think they have been announced, but are not yet on the market. That was where I saw 5gb for $200. Keep your eyes peeled for these.
Have Fun,
