View Full Version : Have you ever wondered why Canon makes these crappy things for us?

Edited: More than one answer ok. In question five, it is suppose to be "use Canon" not "sue Canon" Sorry about that!

If you buy a big enough lens like a 500mm, you get this really wonderful case. If you buy a 200mm or 300mm lens, you get a very nice, zip-up with additional protection of Velcro, pouch. Very nice.

BUT, if you buy smaller lenses, even really expensive ones like my 85mm 1.2f Mark II lens, you get this little sack reminiscent of what Woot may sell their Bag-O-Crap in. Hehehe. Yeah, I think Crown Royal makes a better bag for their $19.99 bottle of whiskey.

These bags often have a firm bottom, string tie at top and are not fitted for the lens worth a damn. They don't mark the bag with the lens size, so if you have lots of same looking bags when you dig into your lens stash, good luck in guessing which one you need. I think when I spend $1,600 for a lens, I would expect a nice bag, one that pretty much fits well on my lens, and maybe some stitching that would say, 85mm 1.2f Mark II. Heck, even the 50mm 1.8 deserves as nice a bag as Crown Royal.

Why do they do it? Wouldn't you all appreciate a better bag? Wouln't they, or a third party sell lens covers that are nice for a handsome profit. I know in my minds eye what I would like. I bet if I found a place to make them, I could sell them one Bay pretty fast. Gee, maybe someone will see this Joe and beat you to it....... Yeah for them, put me down on your list as your first buyer.

Hear me Canon, you big, uncaring, monolithic big-brother fortune 500monster? You sell bags of crap! Woot-Woot!

Anyone out there want a small business idea? Need a financial backer? Bring me your production and marketing plan, let's do it! Canon, we are going to embarrass you into making something decent for us besides the best cameras and lenses in the world at this price range! And when we do..... when we have you begging for us to make them for you... forget it...... well, make me an offer. lol

;)

ps right before submitting this I decided to do a poll and see if others have ever thought the same as I did, that these bags suck!

Good grief!! Is there nothing some people won't gripe about? Have you any idea how petty this sounds? I think I'll go make images. That's a better use of my time. :D

Petty breeds petty:D:D:D:D

I havent used the bags that came with my 24-70L or 85 1.8 so I cant say whether or not as to the usefulness of them.

But Im definately going to sue the bags at some point....I mean use:D:D

Especially if they own the 5D!

Lol, just kidding (which is pretty much what the poll is) you belong to the biggest fan base on POTN. The 5D owners are truly in love with their cameras. If they come out with a replacement, I might get a 5D then if there is a big price drop, or get the replacement. FF is tempting and the images I see out of the 5D are pretty awesome.

If I am correct, you just got your recently? How are you enjoying it? Have you posted any images yet? What did you have before, I'd like to hear a comparison.

I've never had any reason to use either of the two bags that came with either my 70-200 or the sig 10-20

All of those kinds of bags usually end up in the closet or something, and I really don't care about them. I put my lenses in my backpack or whatever bag I might use when out shooting.

The only lens-bag I do use is the one that shipped with my Sigma 100-300 f/4. It comes with a strap and is much more convenient than Canon's.

None of the above really.

I put my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 in the soft 'leather(ette) bag that came with my 24-105L, it's a bit short but it's just to protect the sides of it rubbing against other kit in my bag

I have to admit that I was very underwhemed with the lens case that came with the 70-200L and 24-105L. I felt that I'd bought a jag and was given the owners manual in a super market plastic bag. I guess I felt like I'd pushed out the boat to get the L's.

I got over it as quick as I thought it, but it did pop back into my mind when I got the 100-400L and it's a much nicer case that comes with it.

The 2.8 70-200's come in a case like the 100-400 does.

Yes youre right I got mine recently, as in a week ago.

Im enjoying it to a small degree....and Ill tell you why.

With a record of 18-20 (Ive heard alot of numbers lately) days of rainfall I have yet to really get out and test it. I did get SOME photos while out the day I got it, but they arent much. Here they are in my first 5D thread.http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=338534 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=338534)
I had the XT before and there is so much difference in the two its incredible (obviously :p )

Personally I don't see why Canon includes those zip up cases for their bigger glass. I've never used my cases for 70-200 f/2.8 IS or 100-400 IS. My glass lives in my camera bags.

Does anyone use these cases and if so for what purpose?

My lens bags just get left in the box that the lens came in. Can't get them mixed up that way. The lens goes straight into a Peli case when it's not on the camera. I can't really say that I've given them much thought, although they're not *that* bad.

Some of my lenses came with bags, some didn't. But I am more likely to use the smaller cheaper lens bags to keep stuff from bouncing into each other.

The lens pouches that came with my more expensive lenses also get used, but not as much, only when traveling light and I want to bring that one extra lens with out adding the second camera bag.

As to value, it was free with the lens so bonus.

The two of my lenses that came with zipper cases (EF 35-350 L & EF 400 f5.6L) don't normally live in my camera bag, so I keep them on the shelf in the case. When I take them with me I can carry them on my shoulder or take them out of the case and put them in the bag.

As for the string-close bags, they provide adequate isolation between each other if I have them in the same compartment of one of my bags, so they are fine as far as I'm concerned. I do wish they had the lens model identified on them, but I solved that by putting a tag on the string - which is actually better than on the case, since I can see the string and not necessarily the case, and just pull out the case by the string.

Have Fun,

Freudian slip by the sound of it. :)

Lets see, there are several types of bags and cases:

a) The average L lens blue grey pouch: Don't really use them, at best they just stop things banging together, no real padding or weatherproofing. If you have a bag with no padded dividers they might be of help but it would really slow down getting a lens out.

b) The white soft zip cases that come with some of the white telephoto lenses. These are better, they often have belt loop. No real padding and the zips have no weather flap so they wont keep much dust or rain out. May actually be of some use if you don't need any real protection. Again, living in the UK climate they don't get used.

c) Some of the L lenses do or did come with a hard case. I used to some times use very similar cases with my old FD system to make a belt system long before commercial ones were available. Do actually provide some protection although weather proofing is limited. Heavy and bulky. Probably would sit in the back of the wardrobe if I had any.

d) Speedlite cases: The only speedlite I have it the MT24-EX. It did come in a nice little soft case. Some padding but the zip had no weather proofing flap, again might be good to stop stuff banging together in a bag. Don't think it had a belt loop which might have made it more useful. Again don't use it. Keep it in a lowepro utility bag that has room for spare batteries and other stuff although I tend to take it into the field packed in a slot in the ordinary camera bag.

Generally the lenses that don't live in my general load bag have separate lowepro lens case. I can strap these cases to the camera bag or it's load belt; more normally take the lens out and put into the bag I am taking. I tend to take different groups of kit in different bags depending on the situation.
