Bounce the flash off the ceiling, use a macro lens.

I'd say just experiment and keep at it. You know you need a macro or a good Telephoto lens. Depending on what type of shot you want. Also lighting is going to play a big role. If you can get natural light, I feel it gives the best results. IMO. Just take a few with different conditions, post them and soak up the feedback. I love this forum. Best forum hands down!:D

You'll have to wait for my book to be released ;)
(Brain dump) I put the rings on a neutral background, like a white cloth, a hardwood floor, a concrete path (not the best), on short grass, occasionally on a leaf or a rose. With a macro lens try to get F8 because the DOF is really, really narrow, use ISO800 if you need to. If your shutter isn't at least 1/50th go inside somewhere with a white ceiling and bounce the flash off it, using FEC+2 if it's a white background. Try to avoid getting a reflection of yourself by shooting down a bit. I often rest the 100mm F2.8 macro hood on the table/floor/cloth where the rings are, that gains you stability but you get a reflection of the camera in the rings which is pretty much impossible to remove. Some people put rings on flowers, that can be good but I don't do it much, sometimes I put flowers in the background.
