if you have a choice between either one.. which one would you suggest getting?

1) eye one display 2 lcd calibration ($196) - is LCD calibration necessary or is it over-rated?

(or)

2) sekonic L358 + Transmitter ($288) - wondering if i will even have time to use this during weddings? perhaps in a studio setting or outdoor shoot...

which one would you suggest getting that will benefit wedding photography in the long run? i have $150 amazon gift certificate to use.. so i'm having a hard time deciding.

any advise would greatly help!~! thanks!

I would go with the monitor calibration unit personally. Does you very little good to take the photo right in camera and then goof it up in PP because your monitor is not calibrated. Aside of that, most wedding photogs (at least on POTN) use the cameras meter to get it very close (and in-camera meters are getting better all the time), shoot RAW and correct (if needed) in PP.

Agreed, I think that the monitor calibration is far more important. Use the histogram and the in camera meter and you will be fine.

Here's another vote for the monitor calibration. The meter is useful, when you have the time, but as weddings move Sooooo fast, the time is seldom there.

Neither tbh.

I'd rather save the dough and buy something else, or put it to another lens. I'd then borrow a calibrator from a mate. :)

Options
1) Education
2) Calibration + test prints from your lab

ok... i'm gonna go with the LCD calibration.

but now i'm stomped... i've read so many reviews between the eye one display 2 vs. spyder 2 pro... now i don't know which one to get. grr...

spyder 2 pro is cheaper ($176) vs. eye one display 2 ($196). i know the saying you get what you pay for... but sometimes it doesn't mean that something that cost more is more superior either.

so what do you guys use?

I use the Spyder, and have had no calibration issues since I started using professional printing & an Epson at home. Oddly enough, I had nothing but problems using a Canon, even with the correct ICC profiles! But the Epson & my lab both turn out perfect prints, and the difference in viewing on the monitor post calibration is HUGE.

Best relatively inexpensive purchase I've made.

I use the Huey. Really cheap, works excellently.

I think your two options are both great. You'll probably be fine with either.
