Took this with my newly bought DRebel today. Please give some comments guys.

I like the second one much better. There was too much darkness round the edges of the original.

THe 2nd pic wasn't cropped from the 1st one.. I shot them separately.

Yeah the edges of the first pic was kinda dark..I would have preferred if the edges are slightly brighter.

That was shot using 0.3s f/22..

was this hand held or on a tripod? need a slower speed - too much detail in the water for me.

#2 ia a better shot simply because the dark foliage is not in it. However the sky is blown. Some settings info would help. My suggestion would be to use a higher aperture and fill flash. This would even out the exposure. #1 would have been a worthy shot also.
Don't get me wrong, I like the effect in both.

Here is an example photo that's not the best photo but shows harsh frontal lighting.
