What's the main difference between the 580 and 430?

If you're going to be primarily shooting in manual why not look at a Vivitar 285 or similar? .. much of the cost with dedicated flashes is associated with their metering systems.

The 580 will act as a transmitter to an extra 580 or 430 flash. That is, if you shoot with two light such as in portraiture you'll set the 580 as the master (the 430 cannot act as a master) and your 430 as a slave. When you're shooting in ettl the 580 triggers the 430 to flash simultaneously. you can set your 580 to shoot in ratios without having to do anything to the 430 except set it as a"slave". To me, that was the big selling point. BTW...This is done without any extra equipment such as a pocket wizard. If you buy the 430 and only need one light you're well enough off.

The 580 puts out 25 t0 30% more power on full manual over the 430.

I own both the 430ex and the newer 580ex II and love the 580 much more mostly cause of the multi strobe and extra power. The wheel is nice too.
