sorry for the bump, but is this a good wide angle lens for the money? i need a good wide angle under 200 and this seems right, or the 18-55 IS kit?? i have a xti, and the main thing i'll be shooting is just candid indoor shots...thanks for the help.
better to bump an old thread than to make a whole new one imo...

Bought my copy for 100 HKD from Hong Kong and I think its a real bargain. Sharpness is good, ok in FF corners, even wide open. Distortions are pretty low. MFD is only 0.5m though. Some CA near edges but easily corrected in pp. Excellent piece of glass for the price!
Heres a sample photo, 5D, 19mm f/5.6. Some pp applied.

You're actually the one that inspired me to take a gamble on this lens Al. I was tempted to grab a wide angle once I grabbed a 5D Classic and today my MKII arrived AND it was 50 degrees outside! Winter is slowly fading away and I can get out and shoot more than just inside. I actually went to post pics with my Canon 50mm 1.4 and couldn't decipher with my eye if I had taken them with the 19-35 or the 50. For the low price, I'm definitely content with the results this guy puts out.

I used a tripod and shot my book case in low light with this lens and the Canon 17-40 and then used the comparison function in LR3 to pixel peep both lenses shots side by side, and there was virtually no difference. The 19-35 had better corners and is actually a tad lighter at the same F-stop. Weird. I first went back to my camera shop and said I thought I had a defective 17-40! After more study, though, I don't think there is anything wrong with it--just an awful lot right with the 19-35.

I have the Tokina version, and f3.5-4.5....question
Sometimes it won't AF, even though it's sharp in the viewfinder. Sometimes between 22 and 33 no matter how much I twist the focus manually, the image is out of focus EVERYWHERE, depending on how far away from the subject I am.
Other than that I love this lens and I only paid 60 for my copy. It also has metal build and feels pretty solid. Tack sharp almost as much as my 24-105/4. I use this on my 5d

No! The AF is worse and it doesn't have IS. This lens's strong point is it can be used on a full frame camera, for which this focal range is usually super expensive. On a crop body, however, this lens isn't anything special at all. I think you should look at either the Tamron or Sigma 17-50. Much better choice for a crop camera. Good luck!

I will have my 5d this week. Now I will be able to try this out on it. The lens is quite sharp on the 50d so should look great on the 5d

Thinking about picking this lens up for some UWA on my 5d. Photos look good! Is there any difference between the tamron, vivitar, quantary?

Nope. I can't remember now who the manufacturer is. Quantaray, maybe? Someone else on here probably has a better memory than me. But they are just marketed under different names. Same lens.

If I recall correctly, the Tokina is different from the others. There is a thread over at Flickr where someone says that lens has a different size and weight. The others are the same, however. Two members here sold theirs on POTN. I think they ended up going for $50! Look for a cheap one.

I have the Tokina version, strangely the exif shows 20mm at the widest.

I find colors and contrast generally need some help (maybe even black and white conversion!), but sharpness on mine isn't a problem. I think I told this story before, but got a 17-40 after I got this (to move on to a "real" UWA), but after doing side-by-side comparisons, ended up selling it.

Probably. I never noticed it, nor the Tamron 17-50's either, to be honest. AF isn't very good, but you can get this lens on Ebay for under $75. Hard to beat. BTW, I finally put mine up for sale (locally). Bought a Sigma 12-24 and a couple of others and don't expect to use it anymore.

I bought a 17-40 a while after I got this 19-35. I couldn't wait to see how much better a "real" ultra wide would be. When I did shapness comparisons (shooting my bookcase of books) I was disgusted to find the Vivitar was actually sharper than the L!! In retrospect, the 17-40 has much better color and contrast, not to mention the build and a strong AF, but dollar for dollar, the 19-35 is the best canon deal there is, IMHO.
The 12-24 is for wide-angle junkies only, I think. At 24 its max aperture is 5.6, so its a dark lens, relatively, and doesn't have L color. But it's very well made, and certainly sharp enough. I'm loving it to death:D
