Because of the different situations you might encounter, ask the clients what they think. I usually wear dark colors, black or dark blue with comfy shoes. I wear my hair pulled back and a little make up. I don't want to scare the guests. ;):) If the shoot is at the church, a nice comfy dress-skirt would be appropriate. At the reception, I try to be very professional. I sometimes wear a blazer to fit in better. Good luck and tell us what you decide.

a skirt is a no no :) but nice linen capris would be fine - and I typically keep the pits covered, no sleeveless shirts, even though your hot you'll be lifting your arms a lot and I think they are just ugly :) But some people aren't weirdos like me!

( I say skirt is a no no cause I'm up and down to much- but if your comfortable in that go for it!) added due to Suzies reply :)

I like the cut of Calvin Klein and found a couple of nice jackets which I wear with pants. Like Kathy, I won't wear a skirt or sleeveless top. And as for shoes, I wear either Easy Spirits or Aerosoles to keep my tootsies comfortable.
When I shoot engagement sessions or senior portraits, my attire is much more casual, since I shoot them outdoors. I usually wear a pair of low slung jeans, a band T-shirt (the Stones or Pink Floyd), and a pair of New Balance running shoes. :)

I do feel comfortable in formal wear when I have to shoot at formal occasions. Sometimes that means I wear the "little black dress" but not so little since I'm "chubby" :);). I never wear anything short or sleeveless, usually, it's something that will fit into the crowd. I never wear high heels because, that's just an accident ready to happen.

Really, you should dress as if you were a wedding guest in nice, unobtrusive clothing and comfortable dress shoes. Just take into account the "ups and downs" that Kathy referred to and dress so you aren't showing your...self. ;)

Coldwater Creek has amazing clothes for business wear for not very much, I order from their catalog. The black jacket-pants or skirt combo are a must have if you are shooting formal events. I bought this really great jacket-skirt from a lady who does in home shows (my friend invited me). That outfit has seen a lot of wear, and it keeps on going. No iron clothes are great.
Jeans are not really the best thing to wear. I think it's too casual. Gaining weight is a bummer, I know, I have 4 kids. If you need some plain black pants, just stop by WalMart and get something. Make sure they are dressy and if you need elastic, it's okay. Bulging out of clothes is also not very attractive, especially if you have to bend down.:o

I had Thin polo shirts (the kind cut for women), embroidered with my bix name on them. I wear those black pants and solid black new balance shoes.

i wear clothing i would wear to a wedding. today beige dress pants, two dressy tanks with sequins, & sequin flip flops. i like to look like a guest & have never had an issue with my clothing. sometimes i wear black smart pants, and always some kind of dress shirt. sometimes a tank thats silky, sometimes a tank with a sweater over. just depends on the weather.

I know I'm too late for this one, but before your next shoot, you might want to consider a pair of these Skechers:
http://www.skechers.com/images/productimages/medium/21446_BLK.jpg
They are totally comfortable (like tennis shoes) but dressy enough to be worn with dressier slacks or even a skirt. You can find them here (http://www.skechers.com/catalog/browse.do?function=displayProductList&gender=W&catId=5&index=1&viewAll=false&sort=newest&prodId=21801&styleCode=21446).

Those are adorable! Is there enough cushion so your feet don't hurt? Wait.. they only have a size 7.5????

There is plenty of cushion - I can wear them all day and my feet don't hurt at all. If they don't have them online, they carry them at DSW (https://www.dswshoes.com/store_locations.jsp) (Designer Shoes Warehouse Stores).

I bought a pair of Skechers in UT in the winter and I love them! They are black and are very comfortable. They have the lightest feel to them. Yes, I'd recommend them for wearing with pants for sure, they may work with a skirt. If you find an outlet near you, they are around $30-$40 a pair. Well worth it.

I cannot imagine myself ever wearing a skirt to a wedding as the photographer. I am always on the ground, laying on my belly, sqautting with legs open for balance.. climbing up ladders... no way would I wear a dress or a skirt to do all of that.
Also, I wouldn't wear anything really dressy or expensive because I am one of those girls that doesn't mind getting in the dirt to get an amazing shot. But, that's just me. And, I don't mind discussing this with the bride during consult.. would you prefer I dressed really nice and provided you with good results or would you prefer I dressed a lil more comfy and got you amazing shots? Then.. it's up to her.

I bought one very expensive white TAILORED shirt that I wear not tucked in, over black pin striped dress pants with comfortable pointy toed flat shoes. I only wear the shirt to weddings, to keep it nice and crisp and white. I say buy an expensive white shirt because the fabric is everything and a cheap shirt can be seen through cuz the fabric is crap. The tailoring will nip and tuck you where you need it and the more expensive shirts will be cut generously enough to make certain your buttons don't gape in the front. Add simple accessories and you are good to go. It doesn't matter if you wear it to every wedding. Nobody knows or cares.

I agree completely. Choosing simple, classic, well fitting clothing that are cut well and are constructed of good fabric, like gabardine or silk blends, really help promote a professional appearance.

I have a wedding at the beach in 3 weeks, and I still don't know what to wear. The ceremony will be outdoors about 6pm, and the reception in a big condo just next to the beach. It's one of my best friend's wedding, and it's not a paid one, but still I want to look good and feel comfortable.
Any suggestions about what a man should wear?

dont you think something like dockers and a nice, plain cotton button up shirt would be enough? if its really casual, wear some flipflops!

Beach weddings are great. I'd be casual and flip flops are quite acceptable. Just one thing, be careful with the equipment. I was just in FL taking sunset shots on the beach and the fine sand got into everything, but I kept my camera bag on me clothes until I was ready to shoot. The sand was blowing a little and I knew I couldn't put anything down. Just make sure you keep all your gear on you.

lol. I hope you're not for real. A mankini. Haha. No, it's called a sling shot and the little strappy things barely go over the ladies Cha Cha's covering only the N's. Only good really for women with smaller cha cha's as they slip off rather easily the bigger the cha cha's are. Hope I kept that PG enough.
