I have a Tamrac Expedition 7 Pack that I am very happy with. But I am thinking that there are certain situations when the pack could be an albatross like when we go out on a smallish 50' boat in search of pelagic birds. I think the pack would create more problems than it is worth.

So I got to thinking about a vest. I have checked out the Domke and Tamrac online. What I am wondering is whether either of those have a pocket big enough to stash a 400mm f/5.6L?

For the birds and wildlife I am thinking of taking along the 400 5.6 and my 70-300 IS. If I switch to the 70-300, I have to put the 400 somewhere.

Anyone with experience with these vest who can tell me if I can stash a 400 in one of the pockets?

Come on. Somebody has got to be able to help me out here. I am looking for a photo vest with deep enough pockets to stash a 400mm f/5.6 lens. Would either the Domke or the Tamrac fit the bill? Any others?

I believe one of these will work nicely.

I just got a vest for fathers day.. it's GREAT... I've just gotta figure out a better way to attach my tripod to myself.. (maybe some caribeeners and the rings on the vest... hmm)

I've got one of the Domke's....

I have the POTN vest and it holds the 70-200 quite nicely and, if I am careful, the 100-400. There is a big pocket at the back, too, you just have to make sure you don't sit down too quickly. ;)

unferth is correct in saying that a tripod or monopod needs a bit more thought - but I had that 'problem' with the bag, too.

Thanks folks. I am studying the options now.

Unferth, I have a Manfrotto tripod and head and bought a carrying strap for it. It clips to a hook at the top and loops around the legs at the bottom. Then it gets slung over my shoulder. It is how I plan to tote the tripod.

Also none of these vest options seem able to handle a 400mm f/5.6. So I attached a spare OpTech neck strap to the Cordura case that came with the 400 and I will put that over the other shoulder.

Everytime I think I have this figured out, it gets more complicated!
