I am giving an in depth try to Linux and I am guessing what should I do if I totally switched to Linux. Do you know how could I download and, eventually, convert pictures?
Thanks in advance

My home computer is Linux-only. (I work in a Unix environment at my school, and just find it easier to stick with it.) Here's what I use for photo stuff:
Digikam (http://digikam.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html) for downloading photos from my camera
The GIMP (http://gimp.org/) for photo editing and format conversion
hugin (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/) / PanoTools (http://www.path.unimelb.edu.au/~dersch/) for stitching panoramas
You might find it frustrating when someone tells you about a great Photoshop plug-in and you can't use it. But overall I have no complaints about the available tools for working with photos and graphics in Linux.

Thanks, my big doubt was the download. I suspect that Linux may become my only OS in a very near future ...

I should have included this link too: the list of cameras (http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php) supported by the gPhoto project (which Digikam builds on). Canon seems to be very well represented!
