I'm hoping to buy this lens this week. Either this or the 500 F4 :) After seeing those bike shots, I'm thinking this lens is better for sports. I shoot Football, Marathons, Triathlons all the time.

Greetings all. Below is my first post to this forum. If this one goes well, I have a couple of other pictures I will add as examples. Great forum. Hope my contribution helps.

Shot from outside fence about 20 feet from foul line. You can see a part of second base by his foot to give you some distance reference. Settings: f/4 1/3200 0ev ISO200

I soooo need this lens!!! I've been doing some sports photography, and next year will be shooting at night. I'd better start saving up!!

His eyes are green but his irides were sharpened, saturated, and given an exposure boost. The sclerae were given a 0.5 + exposure boost as well. I waited to take the pic until the late afternoon golden, liquid light to help the colors and get the setting sunlight under the bill of the cap to avoid shadows.

Hi oldgear,

That body is a Nikon F4 (not the F4s or F4e, just the plain F4). An awesome camera in its day.

Some tennis shots. You need to think carefully where to place yourself when shooting tennis with a 400mm. Tight shots are order of the day, but timing is everything. Even a 1D can deliver 4 or 5 shots with no ball if timing is slightly out. Good fun though, and when you nail one it sure as hell beats football.

Thanks Mark.

Not sure if anyone else as ever had a problem with the tripod collar but mine went just before the start of a football game the other month. It wouldn't turn fully round the lens and could't get it into a position to use a monopod.

Cost just under £100.00 for Canon to repair which was less than I thought it would cost.

Thanks George, actually since its only 10 days old going to send it back to BH and get another copy.

Looking back over this thread makes it clear how sharp this lens should be, even my earlier posts with that last copy I had are much sharper than I can get now, even after Micro Adjustment.

It's a common problem with the 400/2.8. The screws underneath the collar becomes loose and pop up where the name plate is and stops the collar from rotating. To fix just remove the nameplate and find the loose screw and screw it back into place, then screw back on the name plate, be careful not to lose the very small screws that hold the nameplate x4 in place. Also helps when not using the lens to tighten the collar on the lens so it doesn't move. Hope this helps and should save you 100pounds in future.

Some shots taken whilst out walking the dog.
Makes a pleasant change not having to get the ball in the shot as well as the subject. The joys of a day off!

Should have some worthy shots for this thread shortly, just working on my technique as this is my first big glass, find it even works reasonably well with a stacked 2x and 1.4x, focus is slow and it hunts a lot, but it is definitely doable, pics to follow :)

Nice one Gadget-Guy. That certainly answers the question of whether you can safely use the 400 with a 2x at 800. I might ultimately go that way myself. As I like to do both sports and wildlife I'm a bit torn on the big whites (I'd only buy one), but with this combo it looks like I'd be good for both.

Just picked up this lens from a buddy of mine. Took it out yesterday evening to try it out. I have some learning to do, but overall very impressed with the lens! These were shot on a 7D.

Hmmm, are you sure about this? Out of curiosity I took the name plate off mine and there was no opening under it.

They reduced AF speed, canon talks about 50% for the 1.4 and 75% for the 2.0 generation can narror the wishes of the photographer but it works.
