was looking in the 'lens sample image archive' and saw that this super lens was missing.
So, start posting those sharp pictures!! :D
Or are there no POTN-members who own this lens? (can't believe that )
ps: can a moderator put this topic in de archive-topic?

This has been added to the archive, but it would certainly help if we had some shots. ;) So, let's see some pics people.

Greetings all. Below is my first post to this forum. If this one goes well, I have a couple of other pictures I will add as examples. Great forum. Hope my contribution helps.
Shot from outside fence about 20 feet from foul line. You can see a part of second base by his foot to give you some distance reference. Settings: f/4 1/3200 0ev ISO200

Thanks Dom. I think you would love the 300 as well. A buddy has one and it is an awsome product and is not quite the load the 400 is. I am currently looking for a sherpa to help me lug the 400 around. :D

Apart from the AF inconsistency, the Mark III is the pick. Although I really like the separation one gets from a FF camera.

this has to be Canons best lens, although it is heavy the IQ is just amazing, i was shooting the tennis a few weeks back from in the stands, players where a good 15-20m away maybe took up 1/6th of the screen, at full res they are tack sharp out of the camera its quite amazing.

Sam,
image quality is very good, shot below taken @ 800mm with a 1D Mk III from about 75 feet.
Both pics are straight out of the camera, the first just resized and the second is a 100% crop from the first.

It's a 100% crop of a shot already dampened by a 2x teleconverter. Your practically looking at 1600mm there! So yes, it's a lil soft...but what a beautiful bird, and lens! :D

For this trip, we went with 400 f/4 DO IS b/c of weight; my wife and dad will be hand holding gear quite a bit. The 2X on the DO is not quite as sharp as what you have here, unfortunately, but 1.4 is is excellent.

They have a "weird" haze ? Over-exposed ? Fog ? OOF? I can't nail it, but the IQ is not the one the 400f/2.8 IS is known for.

I thought the same - maybe it was the atmospheric conditions or something, but yes not the quality normally expected with this lense.

I see that in sports and wildlife (same thing?) sometimes. I think it is a combination of the angle and harshness of the light, plus, at times, haze in the air.
In any case, I make that go away with two tools:
- Set blacks level in Camera Raw, and
- Local contrast pass USM in CS3
I must say if the 400 f/2.8 did not weigh so much, I surely would own it instead of the 400 f/4 DO.

Some of them do have a bad haze but this was due to standing at a right angle to the sun and panning across it. unfortunately my best shots with the 400 i cant put up as they're all from UK League level footy. Maybe just maybe i can get one published in the papers (crosses fingers)

I must admit that this is the one lens that I still really really want!
I can't justify it as this is only a hobby for me, but it's the one bit of kit that I still lust after. But as prices seem to be going crazy high in the UK the chances are pretty slim that I'll actually go for it. Nice dream though...

This is a lens I will never be able to afford. However, I was lucky enough to be able to rent it for the Chicago Air Show the past weekend. Outside of spending a lot of time getting used to the weight, it is a wonderful lens. Below are a couple samples shot with the 1.4 TC on it.
I call this "The Big Honk'in Lens" And I mean that with love.

What a sweet piece of glass! I got the chance to "play" with one the other day at a local camera store, and OMFG it was almost surreal.
It wasn't as heavy as I thought it was going to be according to all that I've heard. I hand held it quite easily. (Although I wouldn't want to do that on a consistently regular basis of course, but it is doable)
Of course if I ever got one, I would use either the full wimberley gimbal head, or even the Wimberley sidekick as a few users have claimed to use with good results. (Moreso for the ability to quickly remove the sidekick and use the ball head for other lenses, instead of having to either use 2 tripods (one with the full wimberley, and one with a ball head), or having to constantly remove the full Wimberley.
I've had the chance to "play" with the EF 300mm f2.8L I.S., and the EF 500mm f4L I.S. lenses as well, and while those are both also superb pieces of glass, I think the EF 400mm f2.8L I.S. was just a little bit sweeter. Seemed that the AF was almost instantaneous, the image just POPPED into focus, the bokeh was incredible etc.
Simply an outstanding piece of prime photographic equipment!

The ball shot is eye-catching but easy enough to do.
Pre focus manually in an area you know the ball will be in, as soon as either the ball is thrown or hit by the bat press the shutter on hi speed motor drive, sometimes it works and other times it don't, but when it does it's usually a wow shot.
No camera AF invented will acquire and track a baseball, tennis-ball or hockey ball, so method has to be applied
Correct Chris??

That's pretty much it John, I focused about 10' in front of the catcher and waited for the ball to come into focus but I didn't lay on the motor. Just a two or three shot burst. It's still an excellent example of what this lens is capable of and DOF you can acheive.
