Aka: Crane Fly I believe?

I always called these Skeeter Eaters, growing up. :) This guy was hanging out under my desk chair, he could have been killed!

Great shots. You guys can pull off some amazing stuff.

I thought that they ate mosquitos for years, but they don't.

Does anyone know what the appendage is that's sticking off of the rear side of his thorax? If I had to guess, I'd say it was some weird parasite or something. But I suspect its a part of the thing and supposed to be there.

Thanks all!

Neat info about the Halteres, I was wondering what that was too!

Brian, they do have strange heads indeed. He kept flapping is little nose (mouth?) parts at me. It gave my hubby the creeps, lol.

Nice sharp pics - tis true - these don't feed - just breed, lay eggs and come indoors if you leave a window open at night. Good job they don't bite

Nice shots Jen, they must suffer from knee problems with legs like that :-)
