So i have recently found that my 400D onboard flash isnt the as amazing as i would hope for indoor shots. I'm looking at some canon flashes, and was wondering what are some good flashes to get to go on my 400d? I have heard the 580EX is good but im not sure if thats to "advanced". As i said im an amateur photographer. I heard that the 430ex was good but i am looking for a flash that hasnt been discontinued!

THANKS!

If you have the cash, the 580ex is the way to go. On the other hand unless you are doing large rooms the 430ex would probably do the trick. That is the route I have taken and have never felt short changed. If you want to use two strobes as master and slave, the master has to be a 580ex.

I have the 580EX and occasionally when I'm bouncing off high ceilings it puts out a full burst - for pretty much everything else (fill flash and bouncing in smaller rooms) I suspect a 430 would suffice... Can't say for sure though as I have never used one. You probably couldn't go too far wrong with either one :)

Welcome to the forums. What type of use will you be putting your flash unit to? Between the 430EX and the 580EX the 580EX is the more powerful. The 580EX will also act as the master in a master/slave relationship, the 430EX will only act as a slave. If you want to get into wireless multi-flash photography using Canon's system you'll eventually need a 580EX type flash.

The 580EX will not be too advanced for your camera. If you need the power of the 580EX get that and use the options you need.

Check this site for comparisons. (http://photonotes.org/lookup/)

If the 430EX has been discontinued, that's news to me!

The 430EX would be the next best thing as far as flash goes in Canon's flash line-up. There are also flashes of other brands that are ETTL compatible, if you want to go that route instead.

I went with the 580EX as I felt it was better to have more power IF needed and the cost differance wasn't huge.
