Man...that sounds so tempting.

seriously? How much for the 5D?

You got along with a Pro1 for a long time. Who's to say you couldn't again?

Seriously considering it. I am looking at the PowerShot S5IS. Looks nice and uncomplicated.

Nice idea ... travel broadens the mind; gear narrows the pocket.

In fact ... you could sell it to Uk people and get what you payed plus some very nice added cash. Then when you get here just Special Delivery it all to each buyer.

But when you come back you STILL wont have your gear. Why not just save up and take your gear with you?

I don't know about you but I prefer women who don't have the shoulders of a linebacker. ;)

My dad is looking at the new S5 and it's tempting. At one time, I looked at the S3 but, in the end, I prefer cameras that have a heftier "feel".

Good luck

I took all my gear to Italy & Greece last year so I have tons of great photos for the effort. But....it is a lot of work to haul a camera, a couple of lenses, batteries, cards, etc. when you are walking 8 miles a day to sightsee.

So why not keep all your existing gear and buy the S5 for use when traveling?

The S5 looks like it might be a nice little travel camera...but I would rather lug the real gear along.

I agree with you not selling your stuffs. I think you'll regret it in the end, especially when you get back and the sun is shining all pretty like. I bet that's when you'll see all the opportunities and think "if i only had my camera"

you do realize that in europe, you ARE allowed to take pics using an SLR! :-)
you don't need to sell your gear just to get a point and shoot

Who's gonna pay for the month in Europe?

If I'm not mistaken, Maureen is an RN which, depending on speciality, is a lucrative career. She could spend a month of working OT (an novel concept for you :p) to help pay for the month of vacation.

Or she can get Skip to pay for it.

Let's see... a month in Europe with an capable camera

or

a closet filled with expensive camera stuff

Honestly, this would be a no brainer for me. You can always buy more stuff, on the other hand you only live so long and shared memories last a much longer time. I travel the world all the time, and I just use a P/S for most of it. The memories the pictures bring back are just as good shot with a p/s as were the shots done with a dlsr. The freedom to go and come unincombered is well worth the few times you can't get the shot. Do it... go.... see the world. Who knows what tomorrow has in store for you.

Man...that sounds so tempting. And you can ask the WF for tips when you get back . . . Won't the ensuing fireworks be fun?

A few years ago I spent five months in Seoul and five months in Paris without any cameras. No big deal. A wise Chinese man said to have a good life ... that way you can enjoy it twice ... once when it happens and again in your memories.

Gary

PS- What do you want for your primes?

My mother is an RN. She does fine, but she isn't gonna be spending any month in Europe, that's for sure.

5D and 50/1.4 would be perfect. Or maybe a 24-105L instead.

Uh Oh, someone left the drug cabinet unlocked at the hospital...

Seriously, selling the 20D and your L lenses would fund a major portion of a nice European vacation, no? That would still allow you to take your 5D and --as someone mentioned earlier-- the 50 f/1.4. I have to think that that would be a manageable weight without sacrificing any image quality.

I understand where you coming from though. I'm always looking at the latest features on the newer P&S cameras to see if they can get me reasonably close to what I want in an image. There may come a time when I seriously contemplate the same thing...

Well, here's an outside the box thought - sell the 20D and the 70-200; buy an EF 28-300 L IS or a used EF 35-350 L; then take the 5D with the new zoom as your total kit. By the time you get back, the 30D replacement will be announced (which will probably cause the value of the 20D to drop, but you already sold it!) Then you can decide whether to go with it or stick with the 5D.

But if you need the money to afford the trip that may make a difference.

Have Fun in either case,

5D>24-105 what else would you need?

erhmm, what's up for sale, I'm in Cali!

Skip thinks I'm off me rocker but keeping the 5D and a lens or two is probably a good idea. But I am going back to Italy with only a P&S in the springtime. My Pro1 really takes great photos.

My niece is going to be the recipient of my 20D. She loves to use it and helps me shoot weddings with it.

Maureen - you have to do what's right for you.

I'd be lost photographically without the current contents of my bag. Some of my most valuable shots - in terms of the memories preserved and shared - are low-light indoor work where the use of flash is out of the question. On Tuesday night, I was shooting typically 1/50s at f/3.5, ISO 1600 which means that there's no way around using the f/2.8 zooms I own (primes have their place, but they aren't flexible enough for the shooting I was doing). A handful of the shots are here (http://photos.wood2.org.uk/list.php?exhibition=11) (in the last shot in the gallery, the moment mattered so much that I had to let the awful fluorescent light behind the subject and the foreground clutter not get to me).

As my ability to get outside the house is so limited by my health, my photography matters so much to me for broadening my horizons.

However, equipment can always be replaced, and opportunities can always disappear. I never thought my health would collapse at the age of 18.

There are times when we may prefer using a DSLR, but a good compact will do a perfectly decent job - travel photography is one example of that, particularly if you don't need more than basic flash capabilities. The Pro 1 is a very capable compact. Having seen your work, you know very well that what's behind the camera is the most important thing anyway - and you have a good eye.

Clearly you'll be out of the wedding game if you sell the SLRs. If I had to sell part of the kit you listed in your sig, I know what I'd sell first based on my usage (the two L primes - I'd make do with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, which I know from my example is a fantastic lens). However, your usage of your kit will be different to my usage of mine.

In the end, nobody can tell you what's right for you - but I wish you and Skip happiness, health and love, as I believe they're amongst the most important things for anyone. I've lost my health, but I have a lot of love in my life. My happiness comes in no small part from helping others and sharing my gifts and talents, including my photography, with others.

Thanks David! I am sorry about your health.....and since I work in healthcare, I know how impairing a disease or injury can be. What a lot of members do not know is that I have an autoimmune disease called polymyalgia rheumatica that affects my muscles. In particular are the arms, shoulders, neck and hips. It makes for a lot of wear & tear on me to cart around cameras and lenses. Skip bought me a Pelican roll-around case for my b-day this year which helps but wearing a shoulder bag is a killer.
I think there is a misconception here that I would need to sell my gear to finance a trip to Europe. Karl got it right when he said I had the ability to earn that money easily on my own (althought nursing is anything but easy work).

I was just thinking how lovely it would be to carry a P&S and enjoy Tuscany w/out hauling any of the big gear around.

Mo, the only thing I will ever say is this. pick up that camera you would like and use it for a day with out your 5D etc. no make that a week and then see if you like it :)

Maureen you know I went through this, it's tough. I sold the 1DMKII and regretted it bigtime. You could use the XTi and a Sigma 18-200 and have a good range covered with minimal gear, or for that matter the Sony Alpha with a 18-200 produces really nice shot.
( boy will I get flamed for that ) seriously check them out, very light.

Gone for a week and all heck breaks loose! Maureen, what are you thinking? What are you going to use for weddings? And you will regret not having the 5D. I shot 600 pictures this week on vacation and it was all worth it.
