But so much better than the US photo rags LOL

I just picked up the June 2007 issue of Digital Camera World at the local Barnes and Noble.

How do you mean?

It is the "Printed in England" version complete with British slang and weights on all the products (I mean pricing)

US$13.99 on a sticker (with barcode) which is attached over the usual barcode.

That's getting into book territory, the US magazines are about half price but seem to only be a catalog with a sprinkling of articles (that make eveything sound spectacular and awesome).

The only US mag I buy is a relative newcomer; Digital Photo Pro (http://www.digitalphotopro.com/). It comes out every two months right now so hopefully they'll ramp up soon

I used ot subscribe to autosport and fast ford. It's just a lot easier to subscribe and wait a month. The book stores do the same and charge another %50. I many cases I got the mag before the stores did.

But now, I don't mind paying the premium for one offs.

I've been bugged out about this problem for years. It's the same with Photoshop/Illustrator magazines. If you want the best magazines for that or photography and you're shopping in the U.S., you've GOT to pay extra for a U.K. mag.

Sucks.

Zilly

so if i could get the magazine out to you for 10 dollars would any one be intrested ?

Oddly enough, I was never very impressed by the UK magazines when I lived there.I found the US magazines were a ton better. 15 years ago a US magazine was giving tips on ho to McGuyver a darkroom. The UK magazines were just telling you what to buy off the peg (and it usually cost a ton more). Example, seed trays cost 60 pence while a developing tray cost ten times that.

Now I find they're all thesame - buy this or that. No DIY solutions. No innovation. And for the price these rags cost I can buy an authoritative book on the subject by a respected author. Why should I buy trash? My wife used to get Popular Photogrpahy delivered free to her dental surgery. It was only rarely that there was anything worth looking at. Even the it was very superficial as are almost all magazine articles.

I find that the U.K magazines have more "how-to" articles than the U.S. ones, but I am picky and make sure that thet relate to what I am interested in.
Lately there have been great articles on the best places to shoot in Britian but these are not really helpful unless some one is planning a trip to the U.K.
Practical Photography has a great article this month on Filters that I may pick up, problem is it's $12.50CDN.
Most mags , UK or US have a lot of advertising and not much actual photography stuff of interest.

When did the UK last rock at anything?

Umm.... Can't really remember. All I know is the terrorists have rocked the UK with bombs although it has not changed attitudes toward illegal immigration.

The UK rocked pretty hard when they made my Compomotive MO wheels out of magnesium.

They rocked pretty hard making that spiff McLaren that Louie is driving.

They rocked pretty hard when they manufactured Jordan (Katie Price)

2 bad things about the UK

Prices - we seem to always pay a premium
Imigrants - We seem to let just anyone in - look what happens they then plant bombs and denounce British law and customs...

Other than that the UK rocks....... slightly ;)

Anyway back to Photography

I think the UK Camera mags are great I buy
Amatuer Photographer
Digital photo
Plus others occasionally if there is a good article etc.

I used to get Practical Photography but when it rose in price to a ludicrous £1.75 I quit buying it. The quality of the articles was debatable as was the technical accuracy. I used to get infuriated with the articles as they would state categorically that there was only one way to do things and very often they were wrong in that there was only one way and because usually the way they chose was the worst possible option. I looked at the monthly competitions and was amazed at the winners as often the runners-up were better from aesthetic and technical viewpoints. In fact my mate submitted photos and his were often far superior but never got published.

I have been published - in Amateur Photographer. I wrote a deliberately confrontational article and it was published and I got paid for it too. Double bonus!

Wouldn't you rather have a cheaper magazine with no free gifts attached than an expensive on with loads of debatable-worth freebies attached?

That must have been long before the likes of me was born. £3.00 has throughout my life been the standard average price of most magazines, and i have nothing to compare that to, i dont really have a problem with it.

I've been buying the current UK non-pro mags for about 2 years now - and have watched them chase each other - one has a story on macro, they all have a story on macro - and now they seem to have come pretty much full circle. I also figured out that while one magazine costs between £3.50-£4.99 , buying three or four every month...well, it adds up. so last 2 months i have gone pretty much cold turkey.

I like Eos magazine the best - i actually subscribe to it - because while it does carry some technique stuff, it is a lot less trite that the other mags, and best of all it pertains to using Canon gear and teaches you how to ge tthe most out of the gear you already have - not try persuade you that you should have bought a Samsung.

I used to subscribe to Amateur Photographer and Digital Photo but after a while they just seem to repeat the same old stuff. Now I just buy an odd one if there's something of interest in it.

Yeah but you don't need to buy ANY mag in the UK, just go to any WHSmith's and spend an hour reading the mags. I wonder how long you can stand in a "Smith's" before someone asks if you are going to buy anything :-)

I'm off for a good read, of anything!

In London you just pick up a magazine and glance inside and they start asking if you're going to buy it!

Honestly that puts me right off and I go to another shop where I can browse without being hassled.

I spend a good deal of time at book stores and little shops and what not, but I have NEVER had ANYONE come even remotely close to asking me if I was going to buy it. I've never even thought of how I would react to that...

Wow
