Not really interested in a 'Fantasy Lens list', just in what people think \ know Canon will release in 2007.

How many new lenses are likely to go on sale this year, which focal lengths, why and when?

No one care to make an educated guess ?

Wouldn't have a clue.

A new 100-400? That would be typical, as I just bought one after Christmas.

24-70 f/2.8 IS? That'd be a huge hit.

A decent 30mm prime would be nice, for a standard lens effect on a crop camera. HEY- what about a 30mm EFS 1.4 or 1.8? Something along the lines of the Sigma. OR a 30mm 1.2 L?

I'm going to change my Wanted list to a Canon 30 1.2L :-) I'll make a nickname for it- the dirty 30? The purty 30?

I've seen some speculation about an 18-200 f/4-5.6 IS to address competition from the Nikon version. I seem to recall it was an EF-S version.

I don't think the Nikon has put much pressure on them, it's that new Sigma that makes this lens a necessity. Of course, this lens would have to be well under a grand, and it would kill the sales of the 17-85 IS. My theory is that the 18-55 has run its course as a useful kit lens and it will soon be replaced by the 17-85 IS. This will give the Canon kits IS right out of the box to help combat the marketing pressure of all the new entry DSLRs with in-body IS and give Canon time to develop their in-body IS which I believe is inevitable at this point. Also, it will allow more people to see why in-lens IS is so much better, making the Canon system look much better overall.

If its a new L then I would agree they will release a revamped 24-70f/2.8 to maybe a 24-70f/1.8 or better w/ possiblely IS.

A revamp of the 28-300mm L with a 2.8 throughout the range would be a big hit as well providing they speed up the AF

17-40L f/2.8 IS..... I buy that one as soon as it hit the shelves, and go straight to a MKII version so we don't have to worry about corner softness!;)

The_Camera_Poser

Yeah- there's almost like 2 grades of L's- consumer L's and professional L's- I can (barely) afford a cheaper L once a year, Like a 17-40 or a 24-105, but forget about the high-end, shorter focal length stuff like a 85 1.2mm or a 16-35mm. So I can see how an updated 17-40 would be good- cheaper than the 16-35, better than the third-party lenses in this focal length, fits onto a full-frame unlike the EFS equivalent, and sharper than the current 17-40.

Only problem- boy would it cost with IS!

24-70 f2.8 IS for sure.

Provided they can keep the weight the same as the Brick, or just slightly heavier. (Kinda like 70-200 non-IS vs. IS versions)

I would be on that in an instance!!!

24-105 f2.8 IS would be nice, but I would guess that it would be too dang heavy!

A new 28-135mm IS.

I don't think we'll see that, but we may see the 1.6X version of the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM lens (17-65 or so) which would be nice if the price is right. I think that an 18-200 IS has a high probability of coming into existance as well. Sigma just cornered the market in the IS superzoom with their recent release. Canon needs to answer Sigma more than Nikon in this case.

I'd sell my left pinky toe for Canon to release a (24 or 28)-70 f/2L. I mean Olympus has chunked an f/2 zoom out, so I don't see why Canon should be bound to 2.8 as a zoom aperture limit. The current L zooms are so nice for IQ, having a stop more would really eliminate the need for them to update the 24/2.8, 28/1.8, 35/2, and 50/1.8 any time soon. And it would save bag space and time for everybody!! I say 24-70f/2L for $1500-1700 would be fantastic!!!

Not sure how big hit it would be, but the lens would be big.

The 300/2.8 is big and a superzoom with 300/2.8 at the big end would need to be quite a bit larger. I don't think too many would see a 3-4kg lens as a walkaround GP lens.

That's probably because Olympus cameras are using the 4/3 format. Most likely easier to design a large aperture zoom lens.

The Olympus lens gives same field of view as a 28-70, but because of the small sensor, the true focal length is just 14-35. It's a lot easier to make a 14-35/2 than a 24-70/2.

17-40 f/4L Mark II
a new EFs walkaround
upgrade of the 100-400 and/or 400 5.6? Many people don't want the 400 5.6 as has no IS, and it would probably lower the sales of the 100-400. :-P

I think 2000$ would be way too cheap for that. Look how much Nikon's 200-400 F4 costs. I used to wish that the 100-400 F4 would come out, but now I hope they would put the newest IS system on the 400 F5.6 and decrease the minimum focusing distance to ~1,7 meters.

Why, why, why, why doesn't Canon make any changes in the tele-range? There would be so much market for a 400mm F5.6 L IS USM or a new 100-400. Then, there could also be 500 5.6 and 600 5.6 ... But, oh well, I can dream.

sdipirro

Of the ones mentioned so far, I think the following two make a lot of sense:

100-400mm f4L
200mm f1.8L

and from a popularity standpoint, the 24-70mm f2.8L IS, although I, personally, don't understand the need for IS with this lens (it's been my walk-around lens for years, and I never felt it needed IS).

Someone in Amstelveen was talking about that I heard...

I guess it'll be a change, exactly the same as the 70-200 f/4L to the f/4L IS:

Newer optics, all round sharper at all focal lengths wide open...
Weather sealing...
Added IS (in this case 4 stop instead of 2 stop)...
Better focus motor? :)

aero145

SC - no, not really - the new version had IS, but the 100-400 has IS currently. ;)

But the price increase from the 16-35 mk1 to mk2 was quite a big one, so, a 35% increase wouldn't surprise me.

Maybe the 200 1.8L ?It already exists, but only on the used market. It's the only lens on Fred Miranda to have a perfect 10 rating. I think I remember hearing it having a perfect rating on another site too. http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=36&cpage=2&sort=&perpage=15&cat=2

So what lenses really did come out last year? The ones I can think of are these updates;
EF 14mm f/2.8L II
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Yeah, of course... but that's a whole different story altogether. The most interesting thing about those upcoming releases are that they were announced so well ahead of their release dates (whenever that's gonna happen). Very unlike Canon.
